I have been asked to quote a site that will need to allow registered users to upload a video.
Users will then vote on videos for a competition.
I have a feeling much of this will have to be created bespoke but does anyone know of anything that may be helpful?
I have been looking into wordpress / buddypress to build it but not having much luck finding anything similar.
Any pointers would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.

Drupal + a video upload module + Voting API module?

I know some here hate Drupal with a fiery passion, but it's something at least.

I would use the Youtube (https://developers.google.com/y... or Vimeo (http://developer.vimeo.com/) API and not reinvent the wheel. If you must host it, use a service like Brightcove or BitsOnTheRun for white label video management.

I've used this service before also: http://www.twistage.com/
...good support (at least a few years ago when I used them for a video upload contest).

more than a few people uploading at the same time to your server will hose the data connection.... and if you have to "crunch" or compress or change the video format in any way, I'd really try outsourcing this part, as spot13 says....
