I've been developing some non-Latin typefaces but not commercially releasing them in any way. But recently somebody (a big brand) wanted me to design and produce a working font - the work would take at least 5-6 weeks to produce. The foreign language is something only a few people can do well, especially in the very unique style they want.

I quoted them less than £20k (exclusive use), but they came back saying they had done font commissions before and only paid $3-5k (similar style in other languages).

I was quite surprised at how low they expected me to quote.

I don't know much about other font designers charge, I am sure it varies, but do you think they're pulling a fast one by suggesting $3-5k!?

I know many factors go into it, but my gut tells me its way too low.

i'm no type designer so i don't know the specifics of what the process entails, but a custom complete non-latin typeface seems more than a 5k job on principle alone.

if it's a 6wk job minimum i don't see how 20k is a bad quote, especially if it's a big brand. chances are they'll get 20k worth of use out of it within the first year.

Is it a font for internal use that they might use on invoices, print material, whatever OR is it more of a display font?

If you're producing a font for regular use requiring good kerning pairings and everything and legibility at small sizes is crucial 20K isn't off for your skills. If it's display for posters or a few applications, then 5K seems reasonable.

Font for regular use in their monthly publication - it will be a display/heading font not for body. It is everyday regular use and would be seen on multiple platforms possibly.

It does require extensive programming, as the foreign language has many character variations, ligatures based on where the letter/word. The characters probably number around 300.

It's hard to say. Some people would want a full e-commerce website for 2-5K and other companies would spend 25K. Know your value and take it if you can justify it.
