OK Qbn'ers I have a question for you:

Ever have a mentor? If yes, what position were they in/what'd that do? What position were you in (ie. junior, entry level ...)

    Did you see its benefits?

Would you mentor someone else years into your career (if you haven't already)?

Yep. They were Director of E-commerce.
This happened 5 years ago for me. I was one of their Art Directors (this was a new area for me - digital).
Huge benefits. Building up a relationship with them, growing my knowledge in this area, getting advice on how to deal with certain projects and people, general managerial advice (I was managing a team of 6 inhouse and dealing with agencies, photograhers, stylists etc) and just a great contact (and their contacts) to have. We still keep in touch after not working with each other for 2 years.

Yes, and yes I am at the moment – A junior digital designer. After aprox 8 weeks, I'm seeing her becoming more confident in the office and in her work.

    3 times.
at my first gig, my mentor was the senior designer...worked with him for a few months, and it was very valuable...he taught me quite a bit about the software we were using at the time and how to troubleshoot some of the issues for printing (we were designing and printing billboards)

next was my first ad-agency gig....my mentor was once again, the senior designer
this guy knew shit about design that just made my headspin....nicest dude ever...very softspoken cambodian guy, absolute genius in post production for print....once again, learned a lot, asked a lot of questions and did my best to not be annoying.

at the same agency, i also got to be friends with the senior art director. and that mentor was the one that made everything happen for me, career wise.
after about a year, that agency went under....but the senior copywriter and the senior art director started a new agency from the ashes...after about a year, i got a call from him (now creative director) to come aboard....
i was now the senior designer/junior art director...and i set about learning EVERYTHING i could from that guy....really super talented dude....had a real knack for creative direction, and could tell from early stages what ideas were worth pursuing on a project and which should just be cast aside....to this day when i'm working on a big project, i still (and this was all close to 20 years ago) stand back and look at somethings and try to imagine that I was pitching it to him....and what his reaction would be....

all 3 of those guys really helped me out....i owe them a lot...
I've also done my best over the years to pay that back and pay it forward...

Personal mentors > professional mentors; in life, sport, etc.

Don't think you will ever be more fulfilled with contentment in work than you will with contentment in life.

    Seek the later.
