Why did these sites die?
- fyoucher10
Because everyone uses templates now and they were just featuring the same shit everyday.

they got old. but k10k is still up
- CygnusZero40
The value of custom designs has gone down, as the quality of templates has gone up.

don't think it has anything to do with templates. They just had their day. It was more to do with experimentation with a v.new medium.

how many designers does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change the bulb and 99 to say how good the old one was.

The day of the design star is gone. Nowadays, right or wrong, the "star" is how much you can get out of your efforts, so SEO, social media, etc., are the new stars.
Sad, really, but part of the evolution of the web. Now it is about profitability, so we have generic website with a million ads. "Monetization" has become a common word, when back then no one really knew what that meant.
There were some good ones back then. Good, inspiring times...now we live in the world of "mobile" and "money", though neither really seem to have improved anything.
- Yup. That's why I never rejoiced at the death of flash. It has been the death of a culture more than a technology.ORAZAL

I used to troll on where-here.com back in 2000. was a great place.

It's not really because of templates. But something definitely did put a stop to them all around the same time. It felt like in the space of a year that entire scene completely died down.
Although design blogs still exist, surely It's Nice That is like a modern version of those sites?
But for "design stars" it's more about being a twitter bigshot these days.

Sites come and go, just like real businesses.
