In 1960, the Japanese wanted to be #1 in electronics manufacturing; by 1970, they were.
In 1970, they wanted to be the #1 steel producer in the world, despite the fact that all materials had to be imported; by 1980, they were #1.
In 1980, they decided they wanted to be the top auto producer in the world in ten years. They didn't make it. It took them eleven years.
Besides, they produced Akira Kurosawa...
