what i see in his image is a background image with a vertical pattern on top, mashed together with blur + vignetting + colour fuckery. the style of the background image either be faked or done by taking a shot of the pic on a screen. vertical stuff for example by moblurring and combining and moblurring and soforth.
the madonna thing a whole other ballgame, because of the repititions of the background image. if you don´t use refraction map you would have to extract like 3 layers from the source pic, mask them for stripeyness, and deform. then combine.
the 2 things aren´t very similar really.
