    Fatherly frustration!

11-year-old Son wants to give up soccer (sorry, futbol). The last few years he's realized he's not the fastest/best and now he makes excuses not to even try. He went from the lead kid in the laps to one of the last. 'My leg hurts', 'my back hurts' etc.

After a year of quarantine and sedentary life and he's even more reluctant to play this Spring. His mom and I aren't sports super stars but we still want him to move his body. Also, he's a smart player and he does have potential. I feel like he needs to get out of his head and just have fun. Where is this switch located?

Is this a battle to fight or just throw in the towel? Find another sport? (not Rocket League or Fortnite).

    • Print and frame this picture and tell him, "This kid also quit soccer"

    • Give him a choice.
It’s either football or a 6-day/week PPLPPL weights routine in the gym.
      Pick one, junior.

    • Just let it go, your son just doesn't want to play anymore. He was probably playing for your adoration. He'll eventually figure out what really interests him.utopian

    • when my kids were younger, they did about 5-6 years of martial arts. eventually, around blackbelt level, they just got sick and tired of it...exador1
    • for me, my only goal was that they could protect themselves in a fight..that sort of thing...and it 'was' excellent for a workout...exador1
    • my daughter was at the age, where she was actually getting her first part time job, and it was as a gymnastics coach, so that was great.... but my son...exador1
    • was in the same situation as your kid... sitting around watching tv... so we gave it to him to make the choice...do something physical...you choose...exador1
    • he chose hip-hop dancing... goes about 3 times a week (when not in lockdown) and it's about an hour each time... super good workout...exador1
    • my daughter also joined a fencing club, so that was a kick-ass workout as well :)exador1

    • Now, I love cycling, but I know I would have ended up disgusted with the elite sport. Let him to follow his route, it's his life! Guide him, don't pushOBBTKN
    • You can only encourage and support, make it as much fun for him as possible, once it starts becoming a chore it’s no longer fun and they’ll quit._niko
    • Like others have said, let him know that physical activity is important so he needs to pick something he loves, quitting soccer doesn’t mean it’s replaced with_niko
    • Fortnite or other video games. Healthy competition is great, teamwork is great, comradery is great, getting the heart pumping is great, all life benefits_niko
