What does it mean when an employer says their company “works hard and plays hard” or “works as hard as they play”?

I’ve never seen a company “play hard”, just overwork their employees to the point where what little spare time they have left is spent drinking to cope with the stress.

It’s such a red flag when i see that line

    • i work with a company that has this as part of our values, as well as family. strangely enough, i'm happy with themimbecile
    • they care more about my mental health than job performance. as far as work / play. They often host events we can attend at will.imbecile
    • they've rented the zoo, hosted murder mystery party, reserved a comedy club, internal cook offs.imbecile
    • They say / do all the stuff the internet says to run from, but they mean it and our customers love us.imbecile
    • i can't even imagine what that's like. all but one of my employers and one mentor have been total shitheadsscarabin
    • they host car shows and invite food trucks out as often as they can weather permitting. they believe elevating the community elevates them.imbecile
    • I'm fortunate, and I tell them. I feel appreciated as well.imbecile
    • example. the book i'm discussing reading was suggested by my boss. he also told me to read it on work time and not feel obligated to do so on my own time.imbecile

    • It means they put a football table near the breakout/kitchen area.shapesalad
    • Usually they have a 'culture', eg some underworked admin big girl thinks a load of cheesy social crap is fun and YOU MUST attend the summer party etc...shapesalad
    • Why does no job ad say this "we are focused on getting rich and retiring early, join us to do the same", as that's what i'm privately trying to do.shapesalad
    • means they are swingersautoflavour
