I got some feedback from I site I did for some people and one of the things was this:
"A few things you need to be aware of is that image format of gif cannot be used on web sites as this a patent infringement, so you should try to use other image formats instead."
What the?
I think the person that sent me the email needs to do some more research on copyright. What do you think?

a lot of people dont know that i own the patent on the .gif format. I'd appreciate it if you all stopped using it from now on.
seriously though, that cant be what he/she meant, or at least i hope not.
This reminds me of my friend, the business major, who works as a salesman (ofcourse, they gave him a cool sounding title so he wouldnt think of himself as just a salesman, but thats what he is). He throws around design/web terms without having the slightest clue what they really mean, but the clients seem to buy his shit. I'm told the programmers snicker behind his back every time they hear him on the phone. hes a moron, but he can sell stuff.
you've probably got a similar type of situation on your hands... maybe theyre just referring to the images youre using, rather than the format... or maybe theyre just that clueless.

he is a software developer. Maybe that's the problem?

Surely they mean jpg?

Like most client problems, this one is caused by the client reading an article in the news. A while ago there was a company that claimed to have the patents on the JPG or GIF format, I can't remember which. They also claimed that they were going to try and reap royalties for the use of the format.
However nothing ever came of it, except a lot of confused clients who think they know about IP law. Just explain to him that he is, in fact, wrong.

They're talking rubbish.

The company is Unisys, and they were extracting royalties from Adobe, Microsoft, etc. ie, they aren't going to go after people who make gifs, just the software that makes them and their programmers.
tell your clients to go get a lawyer before talking out of their ass.

he's a fucking retard
...tell him to stop reading slash dot, those fees are for software developers and not the end users. the software you used to create the .gif, and your browser has paid the fees for the usage.
if you feel like getting nerdy.
