Hmmm nice to see you have taken the effort to explain yourself.
Even though you think it sucks. Don't you think you could learn from it? In a possitive way I mean?

OK then - it exists only to exploit the many for the benefit of the few. And because it's not all that cheap to get into, it helps us make a nice class divide between company owners and prole consumer fucks like ourselves. IMO anyway.

I know what you mean Danski. Naomi Klein wrote a disturbing book about it.
But you are blaming the medium. That's not very fair. Advertising is used to stop people from smoking and donate money to amnesty too.
I agree. Most advertising is used for big brands and consumerism. But that doesn't take away that advertising found ways to communicate much more efficient and targeted than designers did.
I think designers and artists could learn from advertising. Ads are quite capable of explaining themselves. As for design and art. Most of it needs the artist to explain why he/she did things this way.
Designers and artists should tell more stories :) (concepts)

Does a cupboard door open in or out? Out - I'm speaking from the perspective of a trapped cat.

Stimuli. Maybe I'm stupid, but what's your point? I really don't get it.

It depends on what end of the spectrum you're working in.
Top end (big name brands like Nike etc) - I bet I'd love it.
Low end (local kitchen fitters, used car dealers etc) - you work it out.
Stars sell cars. I say no more.

Even "positive" advertising such as anti-smoking campaigns can be guilty in principle.
After all, do they encourage people to examine their habits and make their own decisions, or do they try and bully people into quitting so that they can get more of that yummy government funding?
I'm not this cynical really - I'm just trying to add as much to the debate as possible.

just not on the internet, especially in my email, and ESPECIALLY when i click on something.. but then again that's spamvertisement, not advertisement, alot of the advertisements i watch on television are quite entertaining and well designed.
so ya, i guess i like advertisements..
not spamvertisements.

danski, you are disturbing the public peace
haha, just messing with ya :)
- Danski0
Ah i'm only disturbing it so's I can sell it back to you later :)

LOL Danski :)
I have worked for design agencies and for the past two years for an advertising agency (tbwa).
I've worked with art directors in both fields. I've noticed many differences. Especially when it comes to communication concepts.
At the design agency a concept was more a theme. You know. We've designed your interior based on a kindergarten. That's why we used bright colors and large shapes.
In advertising a concept is more about telling a story. Making a point. If you buy brand A people will think you are smart.
The thing is that they are both trying to make a point. And both trying to sell more product for their clients. The only difference is that when I see a brand identity I have no clue what the designer was thinking and when I see advertising I know it very well.

Don't get me wrong, I see the skilled design that goes into it every day.
All I'm saying is, I think it's got out of control. You can't avoid advertisers without living halfway up a mountain, and even then you'll get an argos catelogue delivered.
A point, anyway.

The problem is education!! If the consumers get more educated, they can juge more the ads and the companys. In my country there is people who doesn't know how to read but they have cable tv. So the advertisers take advantage of that. I am not against advertise, I know my first decison about a product is influenced by the ads I see, but I dont stay with that product if does not satisfy my expectations. But thats me, unfortunily most of the people its not like that!

If you work for TBWA you're not exactly going to hate advertising are you? I'd give my right arm and left testicle to work for TBWA.

Hahaha really stimuli? I'm not working there anymore. I didn't survive the third layoff round... Oh well. Loved working there...
I guess you are right. Sony, Heineken and Nivea do not use spam or bad advertising. So I never really had to create anything really intrusive.
