i did a blue-and-black-and-white page layout in illustrator with a vector graphic. i then exported as an eps and stuck it in quark.
the printshop tells me that unless i redo it in quark with a process color i'll be charged for a full color job instead of just blue and black on white.
how can i take this and convert it easily into what he's talking about? i thought about exporting each piece as an eps and recoloring those in quark, but quark won't let you color eps images.
i know you quark gurus know a way. any suggestions?

can you export it as a pdf instead of using quark?
cough, cough, use indesign, cough cough.

is the blue you used in illustrator a pms color or a process blue? on the black solid black, or a 4 color mix?
also most printers will print an illustrator doc. you shouldnt have to place it in quark. unless you are using type or something in quark
- taragee0
as long as the EPS is made of tints of only one PMS blue - you should be fine...

actually, the first disk i gave them was a set of pdf's. but they called me up the next day:
"hey, uh, we need quark files"
"why? you can't use the pdf's i gave you?"
"well, we can, but uh..."
"whatever. i'll send you quark files."
so i send them quark files and the call me again with this color thing.

i did all the type in illustrator and converted it to outlines so i didn't have to deal with fonts. the whole design is all vectors.
what's the difference between process colors and pms colors?
and indesign exports .qxd's, or what?
what are the benefits of switching to indesign?
- taragee0
bonseff?

man, i wish i could just drop all these vectors into quark and color them there. i don't know how to convert this.

-not worth $900sounds like you may need to hit up another printer, the guys you're using now sound like they don't know too much.
- taragee0
u dont have to
just make sure all those blues are shades of a pantone color not a cmyk process color ...
- taragee0
and honestly if you did draw all those in qurak the printer would choke you lol
- auricom0
just find the closest pantone match to the blue you're using, use regular ol' black and you should be good.
i don't see how they can only print from Quark.
- scarabin0
so i use a pantone color with tints, exports as eps and drop it into quark?
or use pantone color with tints and insist that they use pdfs?
- auricom0
select all the pieces that are the pantone blue, change the fill to the pantone. select the lighter objects, add the same fill as the first objects then take the color down to the proper percenatge. select the text, make it black the save it as an eps. import into quark and save that beotch.
- scarabin0
man, thanks guys.
- BonSeff0
use tints of pantone blue and black. save as an eps. give the printer the eps. thats all they need.
btw, do you know how to convert the blue to a pms blue?
go to the window menu in illi and select the swatch libraries - select pantone solid coated or uncoated. depending on the paper stock you are using. the same pantone color looks different printed on coated and uncoated stocks.half the fun of printing is choosing paper. especially with 1,2, and 3 color jobs. cause the paper color can serve as its own color..
hang in there dude. hope this helps

these pantone color card sets rock.
first time i've ever needed them.

You may have a problem in that colour names are different in Quark and Illustrator, so make sure the colour names match(exactly). (you have to change the names in Illustrator first, then import then eps.)
Best way to test what the printers will get (and insure only 2 plates are coming out for the black and blue) is to print the test plates from Quark separately. That way there is no chance of error.

for some reason illustrator won't save my files after i change the colors in them to pantone.
it acts like it will, then just doesn't.
