Kuz- your feelings about pants obsession comes more from you than from Cosby- he is not talking about baggy pants- but about where priority lies.
And it's not just a black "thang" it's a poverty thang- it's the attention towards cosumerism more than the well being in your own community. That lost pride-
Rap culture has exploited it's own up bringing- the artists yap about the days in the streets- about all the shit that goes down- and instead of focusing on the issues that buy gold plated toliet seats when they could be helping to build a community center.Cosumer obsession in poverty stricken communities stretches alot farther from the ghetto- look at any lower or low middle class neighborhood- Walmarts, McDonalds, liquor stores, on every corner- and everyone in line buying 50 cent, Marlyn Mansion, or Britney Spears records. All try to associate themselves with the culture those things represent- taking that 6.00 an hour paycheck to purchase the latest "reason they are" and "proud to be" rather than spending it to feed the family, save for the future...etc.
We are all victims of this mess- this is the American Way- but the rich get richer by telling the whole world how poor they were and you are... it's a wasted circle..
Cosby is saying to stop and think- think about your culture- it's place in history- it's future... what is more important- new rims for the hummer, or maybe moving out of the nieghbor you child might get shot in...
Rap culture has done more harm than good for the same community it sells it to - and this is not only "Black America"- "white America" probably owns more 2pac records than the ghetto does. It's not to say that freedom of speech and artist creativty shouldn't exist- it's to say that YOU are responsible for YOUR OWN up bringing- your own culture- and what defines you... making Tommy Hilfiger and 50 cent rich isn't going to feed the family-
it's entertainment- enjoy it- but prioritize-
say it loud-
be black and be proud...no matter what size pants you wear.

i think chris rock's critique of the "rap/nigga/gangsta culture" is valid and funny as shit.
"you know what do black people and white people have in common? we both hate niggers."

Sorry for that extreme point, but the fact is you can't always express yourself and still come out alright.
- fate0
Hey maybe I'll express myself and blow up a large building! Just like Timothy McVeigh was expressing his hatred of the US! But I mean, why did he have troubles? Why did society feel he should be put to death?!
Jus'xpressin hisself!
- Kuz0
no. it is not just about whitey. i've never said that. i dont know why u jumped onto that.
but the fact that your attacking these people from expressing themselves. That is wrong, and IMO racist. Like johndiggity said - people from Texas talk like texas, people from the streets talk like they're from the streets. A man talks like Bush gets elected - a guy who talks like some rap star is called a knucklehead. Maybe itd be easier if they wore cowboy hats instead of saggy pants.
definitly gong now
fuck this shit

yeehaaw
more gumble less diddi
we gots mo ghetto in dallas den da colonel got chicken
umm no
- fate0
Kuz, ok, so it's all really just about whitey and the fact that he hates people with black skin, right? RIGHT?
"Same old story, same old song and dance...my friend"
- johndiggity0
If you're from Texas, you talk like you're from Texas. If you're from the streets, you talk like you're from the streets.
- johndiggity0
You've never seen the NBA postgame interviews have you?
- Kuz0
what?? what's that got to do with it?
what u think they dont know how to change the way they talk in different situations?
- fate0
it's like someone said about the job interview, and how someone noted on the importance of communication in America.
- Kuz0
"They should be brought up by the same society they try to isolate themselves from!"
wtf?? how the fuck are they "isolating" themselves from that society? they're part of it.... whether u like it or not.
- Kuz0
yeah johndiggity, those are valid points. It is rap culture, not black culture. I dont think Bill gets that either. It's his bitchin about saggy pants and talking properly - makes no sense. Those are such superficial manifestations of a much deeper issue.
- brandelec0
aawe shiet, them is hot, me gona get em... holla when you see me rollin down in my MJ XVII
- fate0
No Kuz, you're right! They should be brought up by the same society they try to isolate themselves from!
* laughs ass off, pulls up saggy pants*
