Was talking with someone about color correcting and in a roundabout way the topic of color correcting scans of negatives vs. a photo came up. Do you modify your color correcting "technique" based on if it's a scan from a transparency/negative or a photo?
please and thank you
- BonSeff0
never color corrected a negative
not sure what you mean exactly
- BonSeff0
when we get shots scanned from transparancies, there tends to be a great deal of magenta in the files
- mayo0
do you change your method depending on if it's from a transparency or a photo Robbie?
- BonSeff0
dont really have a method, just slide the levels around as necessary.
- cosmo0
hmmm...both of u should be online.
- BonSeff0
hey cosmo!
- mayo0
that was another thing that came up. I usually use levels and he usually uses hue/saturation. Is there a book or something that explains which adjustment tools are best in a given situation? i've alway just heard "play around with everthing."
- mayo0
dude, cosmo! quit hijacking my thread! >:( bawk! bawk!
;)
- cosmo0
fine!
- BonSeff0
totally, play around with everything. sometimes its good to pump up the saturation, or take it down... but i dont mess with the hue. there is more control in adjusting the hue when you play with the levels

Yeah, i play around with the stuff, but i usually think i'm going about it all backward. Thanks Robbie. Please commence with scratching your doggies tweeter (ear) for me.
comeback cosmo! i was kidding!
- BonSeff0
will do mayo, btw- the lil bastard did eat the corner of my sofa
- mayo0
awwww, i'm sorry BonSeff
i bet if we exchange sofa corner photos, I would win. :P
- BonSeff0
lol!

get used to the curves.
it's the only way to ensure your doing the right thing.
printing comes down to numbers... percentages of ink useage.
with curves you directly control the numbers....
and yeah... scans from slides tend to have a shit load of magenta. scans from negatives, i always let someone else take care of initially.
- mayo0
what's the difference?
i learned jackpoop in school except for which vending machines had the best chocolate. :\
- Gorbie0
with the "info" window open in photoshop, open the curves option and select a color CMY or K.
if you click back on the photo it will show in the info window what the color percentages are on that selected spot.
play with the curves bar to adjust which part of the photo have too much or too little of the color you wish to adjust.
i'm a terrible teacher. it's hard to learn, but delivers the best and most accurate results.
- mayo0
but what about the difference between a neg and a transparency? is there really one?
- Gorbie0
ooohhhhh... sorry.
i always farmed out the negatives. so i can't give you a great answer.
but both, once turned to a positive, need similar adjustments. Less magenta, more contrast. etc.
- mayo0
gotcha. thank you Gorbie-anzo bean
