I need to take a map of the US and create different uniquely-sized links that are clickable by region. So for example, a cluster of states in the southwest would need to be defined as its own link. I do not need rollover effects (although it would be sweet).
I know I can draw and old-school image map in dreamweaver and make it work, but is there a new-school standards friendly technique I do not yet know about?
PS - I am well-aware of the CSS sprite nav stuff, but don't really know how to use it to create a weird, custom shape.

now that I'm thinking about it, i'm fairly sure there was an article on ALA that this was covered in, but I cannot seem to find it. It featured some puzzle pieces. Each piece was its own link.
Anyone remember this??

I was talking about this effect:

Which comes from this article:
http://www.alistapart.com/articl…I am truly pathetic because it was the first article I pulled up on ALA, but glanced over the part I was searching for and proceded to spent 20 minutes hunting in vain.

Here is the final result for those who are interested. The process is not hard, but I found that ALA doesn't exactly tell you everything you need to know. Check my source code for notes.
The effect is not perfect. I don't think it can ever be unless you use flash. But at least the code is clean.

nice one, nocomply. i think it's working really well.

It works, but that code is a bit much. The old school method uses far less.
I wouldn't bother personally.

Yeah the code may be a bit excessive, but its mostly CSS, meaning you can pack it in an external file that google won't index. Winds up helping SEO versus an imagemap.
Not perfect, but just an example of what can be done with CSS. I thought it was cool to share. Work doesn't get much more exciting than that for me.
