Ok, so my developer has an app built into my website where we auto generate various thumbails from the users photos.
now. its great but for my new design i want all the image thumbnails to be the same dimensions. such as 50x50
but the problem is that users submit vert & horizontal photos...
if we make all the photos to scale down to 50px wide, then if someone submits a pic that is 500x300 then the thumbnail will be 50x30 but if someone submits a vert photo that is 500x700 then the thumbnail will be 50x70 ...
is there any scripts that will crop the images?
can this be done with css? any way to make css display only 50x50 of any size photo...
i hope i made sense....

PHP will do this for you.
Check out GD Library functions.

you are on teh right track with the css.
you can use the overflow:hidden property to mask out an area.GDL can make them 50x50, but it will distort them.

We use ImageMagick to do a lot of that stuff for our online design portfolios site thats PHP powered (no idea how its done tho)... but on our new VYRE CMS-based site the CMS can't do a lot of stuff that ImageMagick does, so they are using mask functions in CSS to hide the bits of the thumbnails we dont want to display..
