not personally, but the prices are pretty damn good and i checked them out a bit ago.
i went with a toshiba based on research/reviews/price...but that really doesn't help with your question per se.

as long as you get at least a year warranty I wouldnt sweat it.
my laptop wasnt a refurb but the display took a dive about 8 months into the deal, I had my laptop replaced in 2 days. with my old hd in it. Id buy dell again, especially for the price and quick service, even the indian customer service is pretty good.

haha, sorry couldn't resist : )
kidding of course!

hahah, the funny thing about the indian customer service is dell is obviously telling some guy named raj to say his name is charles.

Yeah the indians aren't too bad... it's all scripted for them. When it's a company the size of Dell, pretty much every single problem you're ever going to have has happened to them before, and they will have a fix or solution available for almost every problem in a jiffy.
That being said, I would check for some sort of warranty. My last boss bought a 2nd hand photocopier real cheap with no warranty and it died the day it rocked up. My girlfriend bought her housemate's washing machine when she moved to Nepal, and it died 3 weeks later. The only things i've bought off ebay that have broken have had no warranty.
caveat emptor.

(Nov 8 06, 17:47)That's what I've heard. I'd consider myself a fan of dell these days and their refurbs come with the same standard 1 year warranty as the new laptops so i think i'll go refurb if i can find a good one...not sure about the "scratch & dent" though cuz they said it might have .04 pixels broken or something. forget the small print.

the moral of this story is make sure you have a warranty, I would imagine dell would give a year parts and labor on anything they ship out. My dell 19 inch flat panel is the best money I ever spent.

.04% pixels broken

ahh posted before I read the last thing. the pixel thing is a little weird though, in our business.

yeah if i may be incredibly anal for a moment..1 dead pixel in the wrong place would drive me crazy...can't have that!

may not be worth the 1-200 bucks you get off. dunno something to weigh out I guess. sometimes you get lucky!

also i think the XPS laptops seem a bit overpriced. i was planning on going with a tricked out inspiron unless you can convince me otherwise.
- BuddhaHat0
Go the inspirons with some upgrades... my friend is a network admin for an accounting firm and looks after about 40 of them, and always get the latest one for himself. It's a hefty beast, but certainly powerful enough for pretty much anything...

buddha if you ever make your way to the states let me know.

I surely will dobs.... you're not gonna come to the airport so you can beat me up are ya? :)

i've gotten a couple of refurbs from dell. i haven't had any problems, and i'd buy from them again.
you could always check out http://www.techbargains.com or http://dealnews.com . they have coupon codes and sales on dell computers.

Thanks for the help everyone. I wound up getting a dell refurb laptop for only $718 including tax and (free) shipping!
Only 1 gig of ram, but I can upgrade that myself once it arrives. Sure beats the $1100+ I was about to spend.

You can spend the difference on buyind and shipping a beer to everyone that posted in this thread then :)
hehe, good choice, and hope it works well!
