These clauses are such bullshit. I'd love to hear a story of one being legally enforced. Honestly how could someone be expected to sign away their ability to work?

After you sign it, bend over and spread your cheeks

I think bitchy female attorneys are better in some cases.

(Nov 27 06, 09:51)i'm sure it was but i was young and it was my first design job. they threatened me with a ton of legal action, and even said if i came within 100 feet of the building i'd be arrested.
karma got it's revenge though.
the company went under for bad business practices, the boss/owner got arrested for having drugs in his office desk (who tipped off the cops?!?) and his wife left him and took half his fortune that the dot com/dot bomb stock crash didn't take.

lol. Any chance that company was Neoglyphics Kona? It sounds familiar.

these are usually more applicable to executives/people whose main role is in finding clients for the company etc... relevance and applicability entirely depends on the circumstances, your position in company etc... But I hear they are mostly unenforceable in practise...

i didnt read all the posts but i signed one before but it was so that if i quit or got fired I couldnt steal clients so if i was doing work for FORD and knew the contacts I couldnt call them up after quitting...
thats what I signed.

1yr is a long time. i thought it's usually 3-6mo.
don't sign non-compete. if they have a problem, talk to an attorney to check every wording.
if they have a problem with you not signing, then start looking for a new job.

(Nov 27 06, 10:03)No. A goofy company called Manta Media. The guy is a Real Estate agent now. His site is horrible.
Maybe two years ago I emailed him and said I would re-do his shitty site for him for $10,000.
He didn't respond.

Seems like most offices require these contracts though. Threy're hard to escape. I had signed one at a previous job that went as far as to state that I couldn't reemploy anywhere that had former employees from the company. Seems like that was crafted to keep teams of art directors and copywriters from moving around together.

They act bitchy so they can get their way. My gf is a paralegal, and that's what she does.

tell them to get to fuck

Wow I didn't think I get so many responses. Thanks for the input everyone. This agreement really pissed 90% of our company off and morale is pretty much shot right now. Don't know why this happened 2-3 years into people's job here.
I think the next step is to talk to a lawyer.
- chossy0
understandably they may ask you not to go after their clients and get your own but fuck the not work in that field thing thats some bullshit yo!.

It might also be a sleazy move to get a few people to leave voluntarily. I had a job once where they would cleanse a few people making up bs stories. The ones that stayed and ignored all the bs never had a problem.
