when trying to win the game, it's often crucial to score more goals than your opponent...

The interviewer is terrible...stop clicking your teeth and smacking your lips, man!

I met some people on the beach today who said Ivan Chermayeff was an arrogant bastard

I love how the interviewer asks if there is significance to 8 bars and Rand immediately says no but he asks him again...so, there's no meaning and Rand's look is priceless!

I blogged this last week (thanks for posting it here, though, Meeklo!), and I think it's a great interview. The Miggs guy, however, is a crappy interviewer.
Some people seem to have the impression that Rand was some sort of soulless jerk who talked down to people from his ivory tower. I think that due to today's widespread social atmosphere of "Oh my God, I don't mean to in any way call into question your intrinsic and unearned right to always feel good" we forget that not too long ago, it was okay to not suffer fools. For a more incisive look at the man's character, of which he had quite a lot, can be found in Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo's biography. Students who had the fortitude to withstand his blistering challenges went on to thrive.
In any event, his grumpiness is inconsequential regarding his legacy to design and designers: the erudition, elevation, relevance, and respect that our profession now enjoys.

i agree with his view on the art director position as well. never in my career did i feel less effective as a creative as when i was an art director. i get much more satisfaction from my job as a designer.

Excellent find; thanks for posting this. I never realized how down-to-Earth Paul Rand was. I love how he demystifies things and refused to bullshit anything. I wish that attitude was more prevalent among designer today.
Also, Miggs' frullet (fro + mullet) is awe-inspiring.
