So, next summer I'm going to start looking for jobs in places like Seattle, Portland, NYC, etc. I'll have to make a new portfolio site and add all new work.
I'd like to know what areas I should improve upon for a new portfolio (weaknesses). I don't get much feedback here, so I have to ask all my design friends from other places. I know I need a demo reel...
I'm going to be looking for interactive/motion work... I will have only been at my job (and in west virginia) for one year when I look for a new job, so hopefully people will understand why I am looking to move towards larger metro areas.

Sidenote: I thought the index to your site was really subtle and lovely and then those big blocks of colour on the roll over killed it for me.

1 vote for no big blocks of color
- yeah, the cmyk thing is kind of played out and obvious.ninjasavant
- maybe on the hover the whole screen turns CMYKSigDesign

Do you have a reel?
- SigDesign0
I don't...I'm going to write a song and make a reel in the next couple months. I don't have a bunch of pro work yet, cause, well... haven't had the opportunity, but something will be done soon!

If you are look for interactive / motion stuff. I would promote that more then yer print stuff.

From a usability point of view it would be good to have the first sub item in the lists be selected when you click on the parent category. For example, "revise" should come up when you click "motion." You're making the user click twice to get to any content.

right... maybe just two categories? Or maybe none at all, just a blog format...

- thought about incorporating some flash or lightbox functionality...SigDesign

Structure your content in a way that emphasizes your strengths and what you want to do as your job. Blogs are too freeform and your current layout emphasizes everything. Show the user where to go to get to the goods.

Yes, go with a blog format just to piss people off :)

Also I think your presentation is almost there. Like Set said the colors on the rollover leave something to be desired. Also the size of the comps is a little to big and im on a 23" Cinema. Scale them down they don't need to be huge, just large enough o get a sense of your ability to do layouts, relationships of type etc. and if you want to do motion & interactive work don't even put up your print work

What about smaller photos with a lightbox option to make them full screen? I thought about just converting the print work into motion graphics, and web projects...
- silentseven0
no no no God D$%n lightbox that shit is so ugh... just make it nice like http://www.archiveofcontent.com/… that was on the front page take some layout cues with respect to margins sizes etc.
- See these are the types of opinions i have not been hearing... good to knowSigDesign
- that's a nice site!SigDesign
- after all im not going to hire you based on the design of your portfolio but the work in itsilentseven

Honestly, the way your site looks does not matter. Your work is gonna get you a job.

See that's what I'm asking about though... what I could improve upon in my actual work... like typography, etc... I'm trying to figure out what to focus on. Like, doing some fake comp work for professional motion graphics or fictional flash movie sites...
- I would not do fake comps. Just work on your own shit. Come up with your own conceptsrson
