Morning chaps and chapesses! I was talking to one of these financial wankers at the weekend. He asked me what I did for a living and when I told him I was a graphic designer he advised me not to expect many orders in the coming year. He then went on to explain but as he was talking financial/accounting language I couldn't really understand the detail. But the gist was that apparently this financial shit is far worse than is being reported... he expects unemployment in the UK to increase by 1,000,000 within a year.
Just thought you ought to know.

Well i'm sure he is right about it being alot worse than is reported.

When you said "A Jolly thought for Monday" I thought Llyod had been killed.

At least you know one thing for sure. When there comes a time where you have to join the line to suck cock for spare change, that numbnuts will be way ahead of you in the queue.

Exaggeration is up by one million percent in the UK this year.
- I heard it was 12million.SkyPoo
- I think you both need to re-calculate your recent calculations to factor in more calculations.Jnr_Madison
- Shall we say 48million to be safe?SkyPoo
- Let's make it a round 500m.Jnr_Madison
- 6 billion it is then. I'll phone Associated Pres and let them know. They'll probably want to add a bit on for good headlines.SkyPoo

I have become very busy.... perhaps people just want to spend less on design work ... i.e not use an agency. Or perhaps Design agecnies are not risking employing more staff?
- I'm also earning more now than at any point in my career, hopeully I can come out of the crunch with less debt than when it started!graham

I once met a guy in the pub who told me I was about to come into money, turns out he was right, there was a hole in my pocket and it went everywhere.

it'll be a shit time to try for raises or to move jobs - as someone else mentioned, design companies wont be taking on new staff necessarily.
but i dont see there being a slump in actual work available. as the credit crunch hits, consumers will be wanting to buy less and less luxuries, this'll make clients want to do more to promote their products to help them catch your attention and make you want them.

I have certainly found August and September to be quiet. I have lots on, but none of it is new stuff, just continuation stuff. I have enough work to see me through until 2009 and by then something else needs to turn up.

actually asking for a raise this week....

I've been wondering lately if I really want to carry on with running a business. To maintain and build it I would need to take people on and at the moment I don't really think that expansion is really where my heart lies. Its a whole different kettle of fish and actually requires more input and management, not less.
So I was talking to one client (Publisher1), about another client (Publisher2), and I mentioned I was thinking of approaching Publisher2 with the idea that I come and work for them in-house. Publisher1 immediately said "We'd offer you something in-house if you wanted to" and I really wanted to just say "GREAT! LETS FUCKING DO THAT SHIT BABY, RIGHT HERE".
Its really odd, but all the intangible benefits of being my own man feel diminished now I have a family. Suddenly a regular 9-to-6 with a salary every month and less need to lie awake churning over difficult situations in my mind has tremendous appeal.
So I guess I'm saying... anyone out there looking, ahem, well, I am System 7 compliant, I have my own copy of Suitcase2 and DiskDoubler, and I know Quark 3.0 like the back of my hand.
Back of my hand I tell you!

The following reply is based on 99% naivety so apologies in advance...
Why is the world so financially fucked up at the moment? I mean... really... everyone is still getting the paid the same amount (or more)... what exactly has gone wrong? The housing market is fucked... so don't sell your house right now for a loss. Stocks are down because of America... why should the UK get raped because of their incompetence...
Yeah, I'm pretty clueless with this sort of thing... I live in a little bubble, next to Michael Jackson.
