I have a meeting with Aquent Thursday
I'll let you know.

6 years experience in design/production design, mostly the latter but I'm trying to move back toward design. I'd say I'm between a junior and intermediate.

I was with Creative Niche for about 9 months great place.

Print mostly? It might be a bit quiet out there right now. Many larger clients are cagey at the moment. Sears Canada is laying people off every three days and they're not the only ones.
Aquent Toronto doesn't seem that bad at all, I've had freelancers from there before. They sound busy as all hell so they might be a decent stop-gap.
Flash and web design and production people are in high-demand lately it seems.

entirely print

freelancers unlimited. I think they have been leaning more and more towards web stuff but they should still be able to hook up you.

What kind of work are you looking for i_monk?
What's your level of experience and/or expertise?

FInd your own stuff. More often than not its a blessing for agencies not to have to pay finders fees. You'll probably find better work too and establish better relationships with the natives

nobody?

I don't have time to find my own stuff. All of my contacts are dry at the moment anyway, because it did occur to me to ask around.

I signed up with Aquent back when in lived in Toronto. Although technically I was on their "roster," they never once sent me a job lead. I've heard you have to badger them everyday if you expect them to actually help you get gigs.
I dunno. I felt it was a lot of effort for minimal reward. You're almost better off marketing yourself without the intermediary.
- yep. my wife has had a hell of a time getting anything back from them.Gucci
- same issue in Los Angeles, CA. with Aquent. they suck big time.akrokdesign

One of my clients' inhouse staff is going on mat-leave in January. They asked if I knew anybody. It's inhouse print/marketing for a financial institution. Fire me your portfolio and I'll have a look.

I don't know who would take the most out of you paycheck, but the standard is for them to take 30% to 50% of what they bill the client and you get the rest. Pretty steep.
As much as what they can get away with really, which is why they won't tell you what they bill the client.
It's always best to find work on your own for the purposes of your paycheck, and also the type of work you might get.
- Agreed, but he says he's played out on that front and just needs a stop-gap.pylon

I heard Creative Niche is pretty good. A few designers that work with me came through there.
