This whole industry is managed by perception. How the hell do you think they got to the top of their roost? Through hard work? They perpetuate the illusion of being better. Maybe there's talent there and maybe there isn't. When it comes down to it, I don't see their work as better than anyone else's, but somehow they "appear" that way. I believe it's that quality that largely differentiates us designers to other people (and to a huge extent, to each other as designers). Selling yourself. I for one am awful at it, no matter how good I may or may not be at designing.

For those that didn't get it... I woke up feeling like a bear with a sore head as it was extremely hot here in Melbourne overnight and I slept badly. I saw a couple of boring, sub excellent (sucky) logos from a respected Design Firm and overreacted to the max.
If only I'd been able to get back to sleep I wouldn't have shot my mouth off so quickly and worded my reaction to the logos (not the rest of the identity) in a more considered fashion.

I actually took a look at the majority of their identity portfolio that people were griping about. Ok, the majority of the work there shown is only taken at a snippet of what their entire branding systems are. That being said Pentagram offers a clear aesthetic that is typographic driven. I do not really care for their recent aesthetic as can be seen with their "edgy" cut off type in the nyc creative but it comes together and works on the Sak's creative. And if you look at ruby tuesdays, I have to say I really like that creative it's simple and type driven but it works. You don't need too much when doing great creative. Pentagram has it when it comes to keeping it simple, but no one, no company can always do great creative forever. But their doing decent creative imo 2 cent opinion.

No designer or firm should be above being questioned. Too many people simply accept the fact that so and so is the greatest because they read it in a book somewhere.

thread marked as blasphemy.

any firm is only as good as its recent work. What they did in the 70s 80s or 90s for that matter doesn't count if they have burnt themselves out and lost their creativity.

I'm sure even Pentagram have difficulty handling asshole clients with multi-million dollar global accounts.
Saying they suck is pretty naive and ultimately, stupid.
- thoughtandtheory0
Most of those identities are pretty solid. There are a couple questionable choices but to think everything they do is going to be perfect is just naive.

I think that designers should take in account all the variables before commenting on another designer's work. It's easy to say "they suck" before knowing that a certain project might have been done according to "what the client wants". Sometime, you just get some clients that just want what they are seeing. Wich sometimes give "boring" or "uninspiring" results.
Even with multi-million contracts, a dumb client is a dumb client.

I love what Pentagram did for Ruby Tuesday. They single handedly turned that restaurant around - menus, interiors, branding... -everything.

Amicus I agree with you!

I haven't read any of this thread, but it keeps popping up and just by the title alone it irks me. Pentagram are the singlemost enduring and lasting iconic company of the 20th graphic design industry. I'll be willing to bet that across all ages and disciplines, the one company name most people would think of when asked to name a graphic design consultancy would be Pentagram.
Its bloody ridiculous to say they suck.

this thread is totally true.
a friend of mine who used to run with underground, deviant circles said he used to know a dominatrix tranny named "pentagram."
he said pentagram used to give the most insane blow jobs i ever.... er, i mean he. my friend, that is. that HE ever had.

Sigh, you question the form of the logos,
but the idea behind is solid. Are you 16 or something by making a stupid statement like that or did just turn down you apllication there?
- Amicus0
For those of you who haven't read through the entire thread... do so please. It explains a lot. Almost no one here knows me so they wouldn't know I have more than 10 years experience working for clients as small as the guy next door and as large as Shell, Mobil and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
I'm not 16, but I'm entitled to the opinion that a good idea poorly executed becomes a poor idea. It takes good execution to be good, and great execution consistently to become iconic. I don't think that many of their recent logos will ever be considered great, let alone iconic.
