I wanted to do some research on how far you can push the wordpress platform in terms of design.
I'm looking for well designed WP sites that don't look like WP, not necessarily templates that anyone can use, but sites that look so unique that you would never think they are WP.
does that make sense?
anyone has any recommendations in mind?

I finished this yesterday which uses Wordpress. Very simple design, not your typical WP template.

Here are a few that I've worked on. Some look more wordpress-ish than others. After working with wordpress for a while now, I really don't feel limited by design aesthetics the way I used to. The limitations I run up against are generally more functionality related, and involve clients who want to extend wordpress beyond it's intended capabilities.

Keep in mind, a Wordpress site can look as good, bad, mediocre as any other site. There's nothing about the fact that it's Wordpress that has any impact on the visual design.
Any site design you come up with, pretty much, can be built with any CMS, so choose the CMS based on ease of use rather thinking your options are narrowed by the visual design/ layout you are aiming for.
- I totally agree, but personally didn't reach this realization until I had a lot of CMS experience under my belt.nocomply
- +5. the beauty of wordpress is it's close to limitless and cheap to develop for.airey
- I think people get misled by the massive number of Wordpress themes out there (which are actually good tools to get started)ukit
- and handy for low budgetsCheDouglas
