after working for some time with fetish illustrator michael manning (one of my favorite artists since i was 15, whom i also commissioned to design my first tattoo) on my next piece, we finalized the design yesterday.
the concept is a "chaos spiral": an 8-pointed chaos star and a spiral, integrated into one piece.
in my world-view chaos is the essential creative force, a random stream of data churning into the cosmos. the spiral represents a sort of reverse-entropy in which this data becomes more and more complex until it reaches a point where it becomes self-aware, takes over and strives for further complexity in order to escape death (un-complexity or zero).
just thought i'd share the process with you guys, and document it for myself.

If he does fetish stuff and you love his work, why not get a fetish tattoo?

to me it just looks like a throwing star. it's nice that you put a lot of time and thought into it, but the end product doesn't really reflect this.
this is of course my opinion so you can tell me to just fuck off if you would like :)

Personally, the very first sketch up there resonates the most with me, with respect to the process and thought stream you describe, and knowing what I do about chaos, vis a vis Carroll and Sherwin. But that's just me.
- yeah, i just felt the first three were too literalscarabin

Where will you place the tattoo?

you should get it on your face...

yeah, i see the shuriken thing, and that certainly occurred to me before we ever got started. i'm not a ninja and all my friends know that so i wasn't too worried about it.
what i wanted was something simple, iconic, essential. a way to illustrate both concepts and introduce a new symbol into the world. the finished piece accomplished all these goals for me and i couldn't be happier with it :D
