Advised by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt and others, government are opening up data for reuse. This site seeks to give a way into the wealth of government data and is under constant development. We want to work with you to make it better.
We’re very aware that there are more people like you outside of government who have the skills and abilities to make wonderful things out of public data. These are our first steps in building a collaborative relationship with you.

Okay, I was about to say it's a step in the right direction etc.. blah blah blah.
BUT - I just clicked on a random dataset .. ended up here:
http://data.gov.uk/dataset/abstr…
It's supplying the data in a PDF ... how the hell is this going to be useful to anyone? Shouldn't the data be supplied in a range of formats..? If they stored it in a database, they'd be able to supply it via RSS, XML, XLS, CSV etc. etc.. It could be amazing.
At the moment it looks like a large part of the site is just sign-posting, providing links to data that's already supplied by other government sites.
The SPARQL stuff looks interesting, but I'm not sure how many datasets are accessible that way.
The front-end could do with some obvious improvements, and it's difficult to find stuff. But still - I'm kind of impressed that this project even got off the ground.

For a UK Government website it's bloody amazing too see CSS in use. As for the site itself it looks like a good idea if they can get it to work properly, that is to share data.

Frankly, if the government are involved, I'm amazed it ever got this far.... the data might be fun to play with though.
