All good points. Admittedly I have little experience with setting up event registration, so your insight is definitely helpful. Using an outside vendor is certainly a possibility. The issue is finding one that will let us create our own skin and that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for transactions.

ubercart is great.

any shopping solution will use ssl and communicate directly with a payment gateway, and shouldn't do anything stupid like store payment details in a database, so there's really not much that will make one solution inherently less secure than another. regardless of what you choose, I'd hire someone that has experience with setting up ssl if you're not comfortable with it. I've used WP Shopp and WP E-Commerce plugins without issue and would recommend them. I don't know specifically what would be required for event registration that may not be covered by either of these, so I can't speak to that exactly. Any solution you choose runs the risk of being abandoned by the developers anyway, that's the risk you take if you're not writing it yourself. I've also done event registration and ticket sales where the client had an account with a site that handled all of that, so any transactions would get handed off to another site. not as pretty of course, but possibly an option.

acescence, which WP e-commerce system did you like more? Why?

EventBooker (http://www.eventbooker.com) event management software is in beta but might be the kind of thing you are looking for. They were accepting beta applications by email and maybe still are.

I prefer Shopp over WP E-Commerce, the code is a bit more sane and the template system extends on WP's template tag system nicely, so it's really easy to pick up and put together completely custom pages. WP E-Commerce mixes a lot of markup in with the code, so you've got to touch more files to get a totally custom layout and I think I ended up editing some core files to get a few things I wanted, which makes updating more difficult. WP E-Commerce has a few features that Shopp doesn't though.
