I just randomly came across this page of videos on mashable via some other link:

it occured to me that CG is now capable of being truly convincing these days (unlike a lot of those clips), it's now the context of the footage and the media surrounding it that makes or breaks it's believability.
So I was thinking, if a small group of really good CG animators were to team up and created maybe 15 pieces of footage from different angles and distances made to look like they were shot on camera phones etc, combined with maybe some crowd actors etc.
then combined with twitter/facebook and other social media, it wouldn't be that hard to convince new channels and a large group of people that it was real. Has this ever been done?

This is idea (which is great, mind, I'm not slamming it) reminds me of the footage plot thread in Pattern Recognition.

How about pretending we found a cure to cancer,
contact news channels, get the news papers in the bandwagon
then at the press conference say it was all a hoax,ahhahahahah hilarious,
