I went to Ft. Tilden beach the other week - pretty nice/secluded. No life guards or amenities nearby, so plan accordingly.
If you wanna hop on NJ Transit, Spring Lake beach in jersey is REALLY nice. About a 2 hour-ish commute.
Theres always Brighton beach, Coney etc...
- next to Tilden is Riis Beach. Nice, amenities, life guards, don't need a permitChrista

Rent a car or take the LIRR and head to Long Beach in Long Island, not a bad drive (about an hour in light traffic) from the city and a nice big beach, not much of a boardwalk but plenty of restaurants + shops around...

Sandy Hook NJ, really close to BK.
http://www.sandy-hook.com/Or take the trip down to the Toms River area (but not Sleaside Heights!), Pt Pleasant is great for kids (there's a boardwalk and rides), or Brielle which is great to take a one year old (lots of kids at this beach. This is where I take my fam).

Long beach = $12 beach fee. I was there a few weeks ago.
45 mins on train from NY. Time Out NY did a good beach guide a few weeks back, should still be online. Check it out and enjoy NYC.
Have been here for 3 months and love it. Sadly going back to London next week :(

The further east on Long Island you go the better the waves.

Robert Moses is the best beach by far.
- True, but Long Beach gives you the town/restaurants off the beach and easier mass transportTheBlueOne

Everything you see on Jersey Shore, and everything you think you know about NJ's shoreline from popular media, is literally isolated to like a 10 mile radius around Seaside Heights. It's literally a blip in the radar, and incredibly easy to avoid. It just gets all of the tabloid exposure. There's some gorgeous and super quiet beaches all across NJ.
- ..and parts of WIldwood too. But not the Crest.TheBlueOne

Lido Beach, next to long beach, is my favorite. Non-Resident could cost u a small fortune though.

Jones Beach is really nice. I hate Long Beach. It costs money to get on the beach, it's crowded and half the time they won't let you in the water because of waves/rocks/dangers.

Ultimate irony: the best beach in NJ is just south of Seaside (which is prob. the worst)....Island Beach State Park. Since it's a state park it's not developed...natural untouched sand dunes & pristine. There's a huge concession building in the middle. It has limited parking so you need to get there early. With a kid, you're up at dawn anyway. Well worth it...it's unlike anything else nearby aside from the hamptons...which isn't actually nearby.
