Remember the whole 56k modem web!
And anything over 45kb was cutting edge or pushing it ,
I just got a file sent "optimized" by a Client's designer and they want it to run on a landing page at 1000x624 @ 882kb
why? o why?

Why, if this is allowed to go forward, it will destroy the internet as we know it!

no they sent an ad that size , they just sent a jpg , I guess I can slice it or just reduce the image size but , I guess they wanted to fill the page with it and sent just a .jpg vs psd which then I could of done the page better ,
was also curious as to what size a page should be these days a page as a whole something like Yahoo or Msn home page type news style sites

I'd really like to know this too - I realised very late last night that the site I'm working on now has an initial page load of 175kb, 84kb of which is JQuery, which I can't get rid of really.
175kb feels like way too much for a page, some JS an initial header image and a background image.

I mean with wi-fi speeds picking up and broadband speeds, the image loaded for me in less than 30 secs (882 kb) so is it that big of a deal , do I um ..... deal with it
