White Papers

I have a client who might be commissioning me to design a white paper in a few months. I know they are typically text-heavy, image-light documents that promote business or technology ideas, or both.
Has anyone here designed one before? Got any examples of well-designed pieces? This particular one will be almost exclusively text, but I'll have the opportunity to have fun with some line art diagrams. Specifically, I'm wondering if there's any precedent for producing such pieces in a perfect bound format with premium papers, or if that would just seem ridiculous.
I see these text-heavy journals in the news and culture magazine section at Borders sometimes. Occasionally I see one that has good production values and strong typography, even if the interior is printed 1c black.
Pardon my ignorance.

(forgot to ask, are those journals I mentioned considered white papers, or just journals?)

I'm not sure if they still have them up but at one time apple had some very nice white-papers available on their website. (this is not apple fanboyism)

I have templates for white papers, they're very basic documents within the identity of the company. One-column, 3-4 long passages of text with a smaller image and some sidebar information.

My understanding of precedent - and experience with - is that they're typically b2b documents that are either made available for to download or they are generated as-needed in house. I think premium papers and perfect bound solutions would be very costly - although it would probably be dictated by your clients needs. If it is something they plan on physically handing out to people it may pay dividends to produce nicely printed and bound white papers.
