After reading so many things an hearing all the gnashing of teeth and speculation about Apple's motives, I finally realized why Steve Jobs would not allow Flash on the iPad/iPhone.
It was purely a defensive move.
IF - they released the iPad and had flash on it, many of the flash sites (think of all the flash game sites that people LOVE - my kids for example) would immediately be visited. And there would be massive disappointment that they ran slowly or not at all because the processor speed was probably 1/2 what the person's laptop/desktop computer was.
This would make the iPad look bad. People would say - hey I'm getting a laptop instead or something like that. I mean, you can buy a quad core AMD desktop with a kickass Nvidia card for the same price and a basic iPad (if you build it yourself).
So this way, with Flash not on it, people can look at the web, play video, play games that are specifically designed for the device - and it looks like a marvelous thing. It was not a sure thing that the iPad was going to be successfully. No one was sure how popular it would be.
So because of that brilliant move which did stir up a lot of emotions in the design community, the iPad came out looking like what it is: a cutting edge device that stands on its own. And no one compares it to a laptop or desktop - it just is what it is.
Steve Jobs - master marketer.
- SO TRUE! But the whole "master marketer" part is misleading after you justify the decision on a tech basisdoublespaced
- I mean, you're right, it was a performance decision, not a marketing onedoublespaced
- yeah but they didn't say it that way. they didn't say: this is not a real computer. they sidestepped it.
twokids - actually, that's not true...they said it wasn't a computer, it was a tabletdoublespaced
- but they didn't say: this wont run a lot of things your computer will. like those cool flash games you liketwokids

facebook games = flash
so with what 500 million usersand the fb app is basic and to the point but people invest "credits " into pigs and mobsters so do some flash games , flash is not dead

I think that's part of the answer twokids. Another reason might be that by simply whipping up a controversy, he guaranteed the iPad would be in tech news headlines almost every day for a few months. Sort of the "no news coverage is bad" philosophy:)
I also think people over exaggerate how much Apple has done to "hurt" Flash. If Jobs is guilty of anything, it's been not explaining the whole thing in great detail.
Go back to the Thoughts on Flash thing, all he really said is that despite Adobe's inability to ship Flash, HTML5 serves as a good substitute on the iPad. And that long-term, it's the future (plenty of other people including the CEOs of Google and Microsoft have said this too).
Now like I said...he's oversimplifying. HTML5 definitely isn't ready to recreate the experience of the Ecozoo or whatever today. It can't yet replace banner ads (although that seems to be on the horizon now). But read between the lines, what he's really talking about here, from a consumer and perspective, is video. That's how Flash always gets framed in mainstream news and business articles, as a video plugin. It may not be fair from the perspective of someone who develops Flash marketing sites for a living but in terms of numbers that IS the overwhelming use of Flash.
And on that point, Jobs was exactly right. HTML5 does provide an equally good alternative right now, and especially on the iPad.
You can quibble about the "Flash performance sucks" part, but I think that was the overwhelming point of the article. Your average consumer is worried about not being able to watch the newest Gaga video or kittens climb out of a bottle on YouTube? Don't worry, HTML5 video will work.

Is this a shock to anyone that having your processor render media uses battery life? If I drive my car 5mph the whole time I'd probably get 40mpg. Did they do the same tests with the MacBook Air rendering HTML5 banner ads? I think it's funny that the test case involves flash banners, which are an easy target when you're trying to convince people to drop flash. But reality is that flash is used for a lot of things, not just ads and even if they get their wish to get rid of flash completely there are still going to be annoying, processor hogging advertisements that move and blink.
- exactly: there are basic technical realities that lots of people are just ignoring because of their passion about this stufftwokids

Skyfire put Flash on the iPhone but is downed my demand within 5 hours of going live on app store: http://bit.ly/bkNw5C

People are still missing the point (I think!?). Flash will continue to be supported on OS X. It hasn't gone anywhere. This is just about not having it preinstalled. All other discussions about Flash vs. HTML5 and iOS are really a different beast.
- You're right, but this is kind of part of an ongoing discussion:Pukit

Dick Flash?

kinda funny that people actually think this decision really has to do with battery life..
do you think apple would be making decisions like this if jobs weren't at the helm? hello no, nobody at that company has the balls or the celebrity he has to pull that kind of nonsense.
this is a strategic move. if it weren't, he could have just warned that processor-intensive applications/runtimes like flash would considerably lower battery life, but making the decision for the end user is a completely different tactic.
i could really care less though. when i get my macbook air, i may not even install flash, if not to save battery life, then at least because most of the sites i'd visit on there wouldn't use it. however, i won't let any of that bias allow me to kid myself about why jobs made that decision for me, but i'll continue to laugh and enjoy these threads while many of you do.

So, which company preinstalls Flash with their OS?

One of the comments in the article reveals why Flash really will not die
" I can't get rid of my Flash plug-in - too many porn sites use Flash."
If the porn industry goes to an alternative then yes, Flash is dead.

NO WAY?!?!
Soon apple will ban music and video playing on devices, because NEWS JUST IN!!!, they also deplete battery life. HOLY FUCKTARDS?!?1

time to start making apple viruses

good thing java isn't as ubiquitous on the web platform, or we'd be without that too.
- Hombre_Lobo_20
sure flash depletes battery, but dont you think users should have the choice to use it or not?
clearly not, apple keep patronizing its customers and they eat that shit up like retards.
- Users still have a fucking choice. Apple isn't banning anything. Stop being so dramatic. Damndoublespaced
- ok, if i want flash on an ipad, how do i do it? and an iphone?
yeh, clearly i have a choice...Hombre_Lobo_2 - this thread is not related to the iPad...you would know that if you read the articledoublespaced
- I guess it's too much to expect people to actually do thatdoublespaced
- i did read it, i was just referring to something else. the amount flash ipad/iphone threads, think i can be forgiven.Hombre_Lobo_2
- however how long do you think it will be until they stop flash working on apple OSX? not too long i imagine.Hombre_Lobo_2
- that's a ridiculous assumption...web browsers are web browsers and Flash isn't deaddoublespaced

With clients as demanding as they are, there is no way Flash is going away. When they ask for a 3D camera pan around a vehicle with 9 different color options and unique in/out video transitions for interactive videos... and it has to be done in 4 weeks... I'm not going to pitch HTML5.
As long as they're demanding, and we're pitching... Flash lives on.

I don't get why Flash is such a threat to apple? It cant be that shitty multi-touch bullshit. You would think apple would target their competing video editing suites.
Maybe apples just trying to knock a leg out of Adobe via flash before going for the kill. Hell I don't know, I don't read much into that stuff, I just use the products.Capitalism, YAY!
- This is really just Apple's choice to stop updating Flash via their Software Update. They are just like everyone else now. No biggie.doublespaced
- No.... what? you got cut off.********
