looks like hackers figured out the PS3's hardware keys, which opens up the entire platform for homebrew developers to do anything they want with it. what's crazy about it is sony basically can't do shit without breaking all of the other stuff that's been released for it. no patches will fix this.
we're just waiting for new apps and stuff to come out now; some people are talking about PS2 and Wii emulators and such...

i wonder if it'll push development for PS4

Hacking will never die, but you will

Surprised it took this long, but the door is open now for people to do whatever they want with the PS3 and Sony cant do anything about it. Download PS3 games, run homebrew, play PS2 games, etc..

Good times! Took a while though.
Remember how fast the xbox hack came out.
Could have your own custom dashboard on it and run games from HDD. Was ace.- yeah, MS clearly didn't have their security figured outscarabin

So, does this hack removes the suck out of the PS3?
- what exactly was the suck?scarabin
- if it was good security, then yesscarabin
- the suck of just a few good gamesernexbcn

- the suck of damn long installations of gamesernexbcn
- um, none of those have been an issue in the last oh, five yearsscarabin
- yeah right, are you sure you have a PS3? perhaps you are confusing a 360 with iternexbcn

people are talking about completely new operating systems (which probably won't even be necessary) and havign a homebrew app store in the XMB where you can download shit from

they found out how to boot into linux on any ps3 without any dongles. just jailbraking it.
quote: "our goal is to have linux running on all existing PS3 consoles, whatever their firmware versions."
they managed to do that by hacking through different levels of security, their most notable finding is that the random-number used by sony to generate signing keys is not very random:it took them about the same amount of time as for an xbox or other consoles if you count from the moment on, when sony dropped the linux support.

@scara
is your iphone (i think you have one), jailbroken?Because what you're describing sounds a lot like 'Cydia'. Its basically an application that allows you to install all sorts of software on your iphone, no need for a computer, or itunes.
sounds like a similar deal, obviously cydia wasnt the first to do it.
ps whats XMB stand for? :P
(is it like the master boot?)- xenomorph magic bananaprophet
- cross media bar, which is what they call the user interfacescarabin
- and yeah, i've jailbroken my iphone beforescarabin
- Ah cool. So you know
cydia.

@ uan
it was possible to turn a ps3 into a pc a long time ago wasnt it?
i nearly bought one for that purpose, seemed like a more cost effective choice hardware wise at the time.- yes, sony dumped linux support with the release of the ps3slim, like 1 year ago, and they dumped it for all ps3 models.uan
- before that hackers didn't care about hacking the thing. because otherOs (linux on ps3) was enabled by default.uan
- it wasn't the same thingscarabin
- but yeah, it used to have linux supportscarabin
- yes, not the same thing, hackers searched now and found out about that random number bug. now the door is open.uan
- irony is sony dumped linux support for security reasons.uan
