...I love being a designer. And other times, clients scuttle 130 hours of work because they left vital information out of the brief from the very beginning, which renders my work useless. In times like this, I begin to understand Jesse Jensen.

What would you think you would be if you weren't a designer?
- abettertomorrow0
Only problem is, other jobs are worse. It's not design but life that sucks.
- Now have a good weekend everyone!abettertomorrow
- your name and opinion are confusing me.capn_ron
- No confusion. Tomorrow will be better.abettertomorrow
- oh, good. Thanks. I feel better.capn_ron

If I weren't a designer, I'd build wooden sailboats for rich people in Newport, RI. There would be a lengthy, bottom-scraping apprenticeship involved up front, but after that I'd build one or two boats per year and take my time crafting them to the nth degree.
- ...to which the rich people would say, "Can you make it bigger and add some purple?"...ghandolf
- my nextdoor neighbour builds wooden sailboats... it's depressing watching him spend years on 1 project.horton
- Nothing depressing about that at all. With some things, the joy is in the journey.melq
- that's what i mean... would luv to put that kind of time and energy into a paid projecthorton
- My thoughts exactly.gramme
- @horton: gotcha; sorry for the misinterpretation.melq
- In the world of boatbuilding even with that much time, I bet you are still not putting in the amount of craftsmanship you want to.epigraph
- want to. And if you are, I bet that is a dream client, and not representative of the whole.epigraph

There are times when you drink scotch to celebrate something. And then there are times when you drink scotch.

And then there are other times when you find yourself casting loving glances at razor-sharp objects.

i hear ya. sometimes you can do all the dog and pony strategy wireframe show for days til you are blue in the face and they still don't know what they want til the 2nd or 3rd round of design.. and even worse, deep into development. and adjusting the deadline is a lost concept.. i know how you are feeling man

@ detritus – why was the JJ reference crass? The guy simply went nuts, or at least pretended to, right? Or am I missing something? On Friday I felt rather terrible, and was just making the point that I felt rather burnt and a little crazy.
But all's well whether it ends well or not. My value doesn't lie in my career or its products.

I hear you brotha' but I def rather be a designer than retail, accountant or part of bland, boring corporate America.

Do you think it is possible to take on another form of income and just do design for fun, or for pro-bono projects that you search out?
Just a thought.
- I'm considering doing that. Love design but need more money.Glitterati_Duane

You do often wonder how many times you can get punched in the mouth in this industry. I have found that after a few years of working on my own you get kinda numb.
Its a weird balance between holding on to the passion for doing our craft well and just getting paid and moving on.
- that line gets mighty fine sometimes when you have bad clients.capn_ron
- No doubt.scrap_paper

there are many other things to do out there besides being a designer. I dunno why designers have to limit themselves all the time. Many of the greatest designers of this world held other jobs and duties.
As a designer, you're pretty much stuck indoors in front of the computer. Many other jobs might offer gratification because its an outdoor world. Nature, environmental. Some designers find it more gratifying to deal with more people, rather than people whose mind is just to get work done for the man.
If all you can think of is being a designer, then obviously theres a whole world out there that you've just not even realized.

I didn't say I was considering a career move. I still love what I do. Was just venting a bit. Even the best careers come with plenty of frustration.
