I started this quick vector illy as a personal project to simply express support for the folks in Japan, but then I thought I'd throw it on some stuff over at Society6 to see if it could raise a few bucks. All profits I get from the sale of this merch will go to International Medical Corps. http://bit.ly/ed6VSy

Too bad its a crappy design.

Not sure if a few of the comments were directed my way, so just in case...
Deathboy,
If the scam comment is for International Medical Corps, they look pretty legit. I pulled that name from a post GOOD put up (http://bit.ly/i7A0u9), and Charity Navigator gave them 3 stars which is pretty solid. If the scam comment was directed my way, my apologies if you anything in the way I've put this out there leaves you uneasy. I assure you my motivations are honest; I did a similar project following the Haitian quake. In cases where funds were actually raised, I try to inform folks about exactly how much profit was raised.Either way, if you're wanting to donate, I'm a big fan of donating directly to a preferred charity. Unfortunately, as in this case, not all of the money folks spend will go to the charity due to overhead costs, production, etc. So why try to do this in the first place? First, awareness. Anything to help keep a cause in the public consciousness. Second, sometimes folks want swag in exchange for a donation, or to have something that says, "I helped." If IMC sound promising to you, check them out at: http://www.internationalmedicalc…
If you have any further concerns, please feel free to email me.
JSK,
Not sure if your critique was directed my way. If so, I'm sorry you don't dig it. As I mentioned in the post, it grew out of a thought yesterday morning that I hoped could raise some funds. Even if folks don't snag something with the art on it, I'd be happy if it at least got them thinking about donating through an available channel. Regardless if your comment was directed at me or the shirt mrghost posted, I hope neither dissuade you from pitching in however you're comfortable. My apologies for the long comment. Hope everyone has a good weekend, and thanks for checking out the link.

I'm saying scam at you. Whats your overhead cost if not 100%. You don't have to answer to anyone once that money is in your account. Maybe you will donate a portion. But i doubt it. Assurances and trust are earned so i wont buy that either.
Plenty of scammers looking to push products and saying donations after shit like this. And that why the odds arent in your favor.

I agree, this is a very poorly thought out idea.
If you want to do something pack up stuff from your closet you don't need and send it to an organization that is sending supplies

this is always the tackiest expression from designers during a crisis
- i remember reading an article on this last year... any ideas?kingsteven

Deathboy,
Utilizing a service like Society6 frees me up to donate 100% of what I receive; there's no extra overhead I personally bring. I'll be able to collect more from prints than shirts based on Society6's royalties structure. I have a message into the powers that be to see if they would be willing to shave their overhead, so more can be donated. I agree, odds aren't with me, but I'd rather try something, even if it has negligible impact than remain idle.Viking,
You're right; this sprouted from an impulse idea, but it's the best I can do as an individual with the time and resources available to me. I think your suggestion of donating items is great, and it could be great for folks to propose more and more ideas here or elsewhere. Outside of this, my family is exploring additional ways we can help. I'm not tossing my initiative out as "the idea", simply "an idea" that I hope could be added to a very, very long list of initiatives.Poorly thought out or not, if this post gets your wheels turning for ways to help, leads you to a donation channel you're comfortable with, or you find you want to show support through what I'm offering, then this is positive.

Cannonball,
You're right, it is tacky. But if I were a doctor, I'd be offering my medical expertise. If I could afford to take leave from work, I'd be volunteering to help clean up and rebuild. Tacky, cliche, or whatever...it's an expression of wanting to help.I appreciate the time and critique you guys have offered. If you'd like to collaborate on other ways to generate support and offer assistance, I'd be happy to offer my time. I think the creativity in this community could be impactful.
- im going to assume you are capable of applying design skills beyond tee shirtscannonball1978
- Good assumption. I'd be happy to kick around ideas if you have some you'd like to discuss.hellobotto

if anything, this type of product can be worn in some kind of half-baked solidarity and encourage others to actually do something... or remind people that Japan is still struggling next week when the media cant make money off of the chaos anymore and stop covering the story.

here is the basics on the salvation army design
'Current production cost of the shirt is 7 dollars per piece, with the remaining 13 dollars going to the Army's relief funds.
However I am actively looking for donors to cover the production cost. I also am in discussions with my department (The Salvation Army Youth Department in Sacramento) in covering the production of the shirts.'
- Best of luck. I have to think with your sharp design you'll make a compelling case.hellobotto

I hate that we live in a society where everyone has to be so fucking cynical...

I admire you patience mrghost with all these negative responses!
If you don't want to donate by buying the t-shirt then don't - go through red cross or something, it's your choice.
I see what you are trying to do and I think it's nice positive thing. There is a lot of shit in this world and we need to support each other not be negative. If you've not got something nice to day then don't say anything at all!
Good luck btw x

Just seems like feeding on the scabs of others to me. Especially when people only get into charity mode in times of these televised disasters and when there are plenty of people to help out right around the corner they ignore. The cynicism I have is only me being honest with myself. And knowing that "helping" is neither good nor bad, its how you help and what you personally take from it which makes it positive or not. Making victims or excuses of people for some spiritual hand job to flaunt around publicly for recognition or prestige from other is just effed up. Which isnt always the case, but mostly the case. And that BS self deluded lying ego boosting garbage is what i think is wrong in society. Not enough cynicism. Oh and the whole I donated now i need to coerce others into donating to the cause that makes me feel good. I'll use social pressure to get them to "help" me feel good about myself.
But hey if your on the level and motives true, and honest with yourself about what your gain is. well then you probably already know what im saying. and i offer the traditional good luck
