Anyone have a recommendation? Don't want to spend more than $500 if I can help it. Preferably something that wouldn't look too out of place in an office with mostly vintage wooden furniture (a mix of mid-century and turn-of-century chairs, with mostly heavy, rough-hewn wooden tables). Need something with good lower back support.

my business partner worked at a chair manufacturing company until we started out on our own. he always complained that the chairs they had in their offices were cheap walmart ones, when they had a factory full of good ones out the back door.

So Aeron's are still the standard? I used to have one at an old job too. It'll be a bit out of place in this office, but if I can find a gently used one on craigslist I guess that might be the best bet.
Is there anything else with more of a mid-century look that has good support?

- Don't know what the store situation is in st.louis, but you really should sit in a couple before making a choice.ben_

But the leather seat sags over time since it's a sling.randommail

tip: Always call the retailer and haggle. Don't just place an online order. Since makers like Humanscale and Herman Miller usually only sell through authorized resellers, you can always ask for a discount. I got this Freedom Task Chair by Humanscale new and with warranty for $750. And I know they make a fabric version that's much cheaper.
btw, I used to have the Aeron chairs. They're pretty good, but I think the Freedom chair is far better looking and more comfortable. The brown leather patinas over time which is nice.
- my old chair, loved it... maybe a bit too pompous? check out the libertykingsteven

My problem is that I want a nice, somewhat expensive chair for my home office, but I want something without arms, because I frequently play guitar in my chair while recording music. It's hard to find them. I like the Aluminum Group Management Chair above - anyone have it and know if the arms are easily removable?
- arms on the freedom chair (above) are adjustable, one click and you can move them up/down or angle left right.kingsteven
- also, it'll hold its value, unlike the office tat above.kingsteven
