"What we're looking for is help designing a layout for an activist zine (newsletter). The format will be black/white, three 8.5x11 pages landscape folded in half to create a 6-page booklet. The content is nearly completed, articles will be typed out. The budget is $50 for this project with possibly more design projects (fliers, web design, etc.) in the future."
Would you consider working for $50 at first or would you just say no in the first hand without thinking about "future projects"?
My first thought was no, and my last one is still no but would like a different view on this.I'm not making fun of the client in thinking that a designer can work for $50 for this.

You know, some designers just need money...

i would ask, considering its $50, to be paid in a $50 sack of quality weed, since that is what i thought this thread was going to be about..

do you also believe in their cause?
do you need a piece like what they described for your portfolio?
will it take you 2 hrs or less?
then knock it out and broaden your client base, I say.

i say dedicate one hour to it and your are set.

I dunno, man. $50 to design a quick layout, sure. But, it sounds like they want you to format their content as well, and I guarantee it'll take more than $50 of your time to get that all settled. And, I guarantee they'll want revisions/tweaks. Plus, you'll be handing off the template to their team at the end. Seems not worth it.
- < i agree. a quick layout is worth it, but i am sure they will want more for the same price.capn_ron

'...with possibly more design projects (fliers, web design, etc.) in the future.'
Translation:
'I'm a cheap cunt who doesn't respect designers, and I try to bait them into devaluing themselves with promises of more sweat-shop work and worthless exposure, if any.'

Is your personal value for a project of this scope $50?
We really need a thread for this kind of stuff where people actually post contact information for these idiots.

If i had to guess you are either homeless or still in school.

Prostitutes do work for $50. You're a fucking designer, have some self respect and ask for more :)

50k, yes. 50buck, no.

if i were a designer, i'd do it for free and tell them to hit me up when they have a more substantial project coming up. $50 bareley covers a nice meal.
what's more important, however, is to only give them ~$50 of work. this way, they'll understand the value of your work, but can't hassle you since you did it for free.

Man to layout all the folds, and have everything line up nice and tidy, that's going to take some time. Plus, there are going to be revisions...are you going to be handling any production work? That seems pretty low to me. And the phrase, "content is nearly completed," scares me.

Put it this way buddy, you have already waited me $50 for reading this post. You should feel the same way when conducting future business.

Thanks for all the response, and i agree with most of them.
Frankly, an hour of work is $50. True that laying out content is easy and fast but, as a nitpicky that i am, it always takes me more and also the folding and measuring all the craop etc etc...I was about to ask them if the "future project" will have more budget (website for example) and then see if the total amount of both ends up paying for the shitty $50 for the brochure. HOWEVER, judging by the $50 of the brochure, i'm not sure if he is willing to throw don't thousands of dollars in a website.
I'll just reply no and specify average prices for identities, brochures, websites so he has an idea of my price range.
Thanks all, ill keep you posted
- The line about "future projects" is always BS. If the don't pay now they won't pay later.bzsaw

If you do take it for $50, that's what you'll be worth. every future project will be $50.

"My first thought was no, and my last one is still no but would like a different view on this."
What was the different view that you were expecting? Can you lay out a brochure in one hour?
How can they have a 6 page booklet, it's really going to be a 12 page booklet, 8.5" x 11" flat / 5.5" x 8.5" folded. So, you're going to design a cover, back cover, and 10 interior pages in an hour. That's a whopping $4.00 per page.
If they want to spend 50.00 on a brochure imagine what their budget is for a flyer or web site
- Just wanted to make sure if other ppl felt somewhat insulted by this. Im not saying he is an a bad guy but just wow... do ppl really think that we are that cheap?k_temp
- ... do ppl really think that designers work at that price?k_temp
- Yes, I'm insulted. You should be insulted. Maybe he doesn't know how long these things take.Josev
