Anyone here has dealt with creating an LLC? I was told that you need to publish statement about creation of the LLC in county publication. IS that correct?

i didn't have to do that for california. it might depend on the state though

I had to when i did the llc. it is really easy though. they do it all the time for newspapers and such. not hard at all. just a small fee.

Where did you have to publish it exactly? My woman mentioned that the publication cost about $400/publication.

i just went to a local newspaper. i can't remember the costs, but it was like $20 or something. It's basically a DBA statement, I think is what they call it. you can look at local newspapers or some magazines i think.

a buddy of mine used legalzoom. Said it was a breeze.

Yes, you have to publish. There are lists of approved papers. You might want to consider hiring a lawyer to get this set up, btw... you can certainly do it yourself, but I found it to be helpful... $850 to get it rolling, publications included.

$20 of capn_ron and $850 of showpony are two very different quotes...

I got one in Nevada for freelance. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than getting one in california.

yeah, i had an attorney set up mine for me, so this might have been absorbed in the retainer. meh.. dunno

i've used legalzoom 2x in the last 3 years. the only complaint is that as they are in the business of fine print, we unknowingly signed up for a service that started withdrawing a monthly fee from the bank account. it took quite a bit of digging to work out why and where the money was going to - but in the end we were able to cut it off.

I went to the Pennsylvania State site and got info. It was cheap, like $125 or something. Fill out some easy forms. Got an EIN from the IRS. Done. Not sure what NY is like though.

You just go to your state website, create the LLC, pay the $50 fee for the LLC (you have to setup the EIN separately). That's Colorado.
LegalZoom just automates the process, I believe. I've had my lawyer set one up before, but that cost $700 for something I could do for myself for $50.

pr2 I see you're in nyc. I have an acct who can handle all the paperwork for you and she is very good with creatives. NYC can be a little weird about tax stuff. Email me and I will send you her contact info.
- NY is too expensive. And there are no real benefits. Manhattan is much more expensive.Mister2
- I think NY is awesome, but then again I grew up mainly on an island where i was forced to go fishing 3 days a week and I see that as hell.woodyBatts

You can get an EIN online through the IRS website, takes a few minutes and it's free. You'll get the number after you complete the questionnaire and they'll mail you the official document a week later or so.

Huh? Never heard of such a thing. I did it all via a state website. No publication required. Took 10 minutes, and several days later I got my papers of organization in the mail.

waste of time. waste of money.

Be wary in lots of states there are "incorporation" or "filing fees". In CA you have to pay around $800/yr + whatever for a local business license.
Nevada, you pay a filing fee and something else...I forget. Came out to about $600 though total if I remember right.
