Back in the day Actinic had a good name - is this still the case? Or is there a better solution these days?
A mate wants to set up a small e-shop (100-200 SKUs) and of course has no money...
what do you qoobs recommend?

Ta for that - I had also stumbled across shopify. these both seem to be US based - and he's in the UK - will that be a problem?
Also I've found 1&1... anyone know anything about them? Seems quite a good deal to me: 6 months free then £16.98 per month

I been using Lemonstand since September and it's very very good: http://lemonstandapp.com/ - good support too and it's a one-time license fee / self hosted.

http://lemonstandapp.com looks great — any downsides to it? Bad experiences?

My experience with Lemonstand has been good, documentation is good and improving and customizing templates and functionality is fairly easy. I originally went with LS because they came out with the subscriptions module in the marketplace which can handle recurring billing (gateway specific) and memberships. I've sent LS a couple of support requests, such as a custom report and additional data in the RSS Sales Feed, which they ended up building into the system shortly after for free. So far so good.
