Cinema 4D all the way. It's the most advanced one you can use aside from Maya. Maya is so complex that you shouldn't even bother trying to learn it unless you use it everyday. C4D is something you can come back to a week later and not be lost. There's a large and growing community, resources, plugins and answers to help you out. Go through Lynda.com and you'll be up and running within a few months and a few projects depending on your needs. Best of luck.
- Lightwave is another high end program but not nearly as user friendly as C4D.CyBrainX

cool, yeah don't need anything crazy, mostly for motion graphics as a companion to AE

C4D - especially if you want something to work with AE. The latest version now let's you import AE files, while the last few versions have only let you go the other way (export a AEP with all the lights / nulls for compositing...).

regarding workflow, c4d is much more akin to maya than Max and if you've got after effects anywhere in your pipeline, c4d is most definitely the most integrated with it.

Modo ..
http://www.luxology.com/you can set the work flow to be exactly like any of the other 3D app
there is a preset for each specific 3D app just in case you are familiar with them and still want that same control.
