Looking for a small notebook for my girl...
This Samsung Solar-Powered Netbook looks neat:
http://www.samsung.com/us/busine…Can charge your phone/ipod from it on the go as well. I don't have any knowledge of the processors used in these smaller notebooks though...

Will be used as a portable office mostly... internet, e-mail, documents, etc. Will probably get a big screen for home.

+ Dual-Core Atom is a win.
- 250GB Hard drive is not ideal. Get an SSD
+/- Solar Power sounds neat, but as it's not done much it's unlikely to work well.
- Solar Power... Screen glare?...I don't see a price on that but I suspect the solar novelty bumps it up a lot.
The key things I'd look for in a netbook are:
Keyboard Size
Battery Life
Trackpad qualityColleagues of mine use Samsung Netbooks as their main machines (Rails Dev on Linux) and they seem to be well priced and good quality. The one you posted has good power for a netbook but I suspect Samsung do cheaper ones without solar power that would be better.
Why 11 inch?

the solar-power one is around $350, so about +$100 on similar specced machines.
- Oh, that's not bad! I expected double price or something. Look for reviews on how effective the solar power is.orrinward2

reviews all look good for the Samsung...
up to 12 hrs battery life and solar charging gives you about 2hrs/1hr charge.

I'd be deeply suspect of the solar-power aspect.
It'll add weight and I'm not sure how much actual functionality.
Nokia recently did a test proving that current solar tech was nigh on useless for most applications for their phones and, whlist I appreciate there's more area on the back of a laptop, the power drain is also larger.
Besides, leaving electronics in the blazing sun, if that's what creates the most energy, seems like a terrible idea.
imho, better get a non-solar one and buy her a plant or something, if it's her you're investing in the green aspect for.
- hehe. i was more just curious about the solar-panel one. i think i'll end up getting an hp netbook actually.sine

i've decided on the HP Mini 210-3001:
Intel® Atom™ N570 1.66GHz.
2048MB RAM
320GB HDD

picked it up friday. great little machine. fits in her bag, stays charged all day, very nice keyboard. impressed with it all round.

Just you wait... I've never had an HP last a full year, and no-one I know has been satisfied with one. You may be ok with a mini though due to reduced firepower.
- this. I have four HP's in my closet, all shot to shit. One working Mac Air.TheBlueOne

i've had an hp elitebook 8540w for just over a year now. no problems. my colleague has the same machine, also no problems. experience creates "brand loyalty", in a way, i guess.

not sure about laptop being under the sun... or any computer under the sun...
- sine0
there's been rumours that hp will be selling off their hardware division and focus on online and enterprise software products exclusively.
the solar-panel is very gimmicky, but as far as i know it charges from ambient/indirect sunlight as well.
