Multi-ethnic = four types of Germans, one vaguely Italian-looking bloke and a mixed race woman?

because the original has very flat lighting, it will be a challenge to make a background that doesn't seem photoshopped in....
If the original has more facial modeling, more rembrandt-like light, i.e. from an angle, with some cheekbones, a few shadows, then photoshopping in a background with a similar light and contrast can work well...
but photoshopping a background in where the original has flat light means your background has to have similarly flat light, and therefore is likely boring enough that an uninformed client will ask you to put in something more interesting, then you get in this circle-from-hell-loop where you put in a more interesting background and the foreground looks fake so you tweek the background and foreground and it looks more fake, but, well, less boring...
so, I'd start with a different original foreground...

Good advice all around you guys. Like I said, I'm gonna fix that sloppy cut job on the outlines of the people. I'm just looking to get the background right.
Gotta run for now, but will bump this thread tomorrow.
Thanks again!

be careful with scaling and position of the background for maximum believability; remember something eye-height in the background should be eye-level with the subjects (since the people image appears to be shot at eye-level).
also mind the light sources and adjust color hues if necessary
- Yeh, be mindful of the distance to the camera with regard to the perspective in the bg. Good exercise, makes you think.mikotondria3

- more blur? less blur? I'm no expert. Haven't done this kind of work in years.nocomply
- Less blur, looks a little fake this way. Also a little white around their heads there which isnt helping.CygnusZero4
- Apply a layer mask to them, and use a fuzzy brush to knock out those white areas in their hair.CygnusZero4
- maybe blur a tad the guys in the back.just a tadCALLES
- Especially the girl on the left.CygnusZero4
- man...that girl on the left's hair is gonna be a cutout nightmare.dbloc

Thanks, I'll check it out.
I should add that the final image is going to be cropped in a panoramic format at about 960x284 pixels so I really only need something that looks good right behind the peoples' heads and shoulders.

Guys I need some help.
I've been tasked with photoshopping a realistic background into this photo: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock…
But for the life of me I can't find any good images to use, and I'm out of ideas of what to search for.
Ideally the end result would look something like this: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock…
If you have any ideas or links to images on istockphoto that you think would work please post them here.
I will be forever grateful.
