... capable of printing photographs (mainly) to archive and photo paper?
i have no idea where to start looking.

Yes! Much prefer epson for semi higher end printer.
always go 6 cartridges or more. no less. and don't cheap out on paper.
Watch your colour profile. and you should be good to go.

yeah, the pro model is way outside my budget at the moment.
i want to be able to experiment with prints/colour at home without spending too much on ink, but still be able to re-produce limited runs of consistent quality.

Determine the format you need. The Epsons from the first link (R2000 model) for example are A3. Max paper width = 13". Also accepts roll paper. Adds to the price. You might be fine with A4.

I have a Epson Photo 1900 that I've loved for years. Got a good deal on a Canon Pixma 9000 Mk II something or other (the 11x17). Gonna sell it and get another Epson. Colors are way off on the Canon, some images required lightening, on the Epson is was just click and print, looked beautiful every time.

are any of these archival quality? I'd imagine it'd be a lot cheaper to have a lab print them?
