It's been a while since I posted. I hope everyone is well.

Last few years I have completely neglected myself. Life was unkind to say the least. After loosing my parents in the span of a few years, I have closed myself off and just went on a destructive path when it comes to my health.

I balloon-ed to 330 lbs. Then about 2 and a half years ago I snapped and said no more. Never again. So I have been working on myself to become healthy and strong both physically and mentally.

This year, as a final celebration of my transformation I am going to attend a body building competition (not to win or anything) to mark an end of one journey and a beginning of another.

Me, pretty much at my worst.

    And today.

Spent the most of the last couple of years completely off the rails, drinking like a fish, eating ridiculous amounts of junk food. Hit my all time high weight of 280lbs in March then suddenly just started shedding without even trying (60lbs in less than 6 months). Eventually I decided I should probably talk to doctor.

I got some blood work done, and I had an A1c of 12.8, fasting BS 350+. Cholestorol and triglycerides through the roof. I was diagnosed with the diabeetus. Call me Wilford Fucking McBrimley.

Anyway, I cut out all beer and sugary shit, started buying and making desserts and snacks using erythritol, and only eat whole grains. My eA1c is now at a 5.9 (<7 is considered "controlled"). My next checkup for official results is in a couple of weeks.

The first couple of weeks after diagnosis I was honestly devastated, but I've come to realize this was probably one of the best things that could have happened to me to get my fucking act together. I haven't felt this good in years.

Going to bare my soul here in the hopes that it’s helpful to any adults I know, or parents with children of any age, who deal with acne. My biggest frustration in life is being a grown adult in my 40’s who still deals with this. It sucks, plain and simple.

Over the years I’ve learned that a few things are major causes of acne and have avoided them religiously: whey protein, and dairy. I still included dairy in occasional non-dairy ice cream, or cheese, but haven’t had regular milk in about 15 years. But still the problem persisted and came and went.

Yeah, I’ve seen dermatologists, and yes, they prescribe things that help. But modern dermatology has a major problem in how their goal is to help treat people from the outside in - topical creams, face-washing regimens, etc. It works for some people, but it doesn’t work for those who have deeper causes.

I got curious earlier this year about additional food sensitivities and started digging into gut health and microbiome factors. Took a food sensitivity test (note: not an allergy test, these exist too, but they’re meant for people with legitimate allergic reactions to foods, and regular breakouts aren’t exactly that) and the results were rather revealing. The conventional wisdom is that food sensitivities = inflammation = acne if you’re prone to those issues.

Besides the test confirming that whey protein and all forms of dairy were high sensitivity foods for me, the results also included these foods as high sensitivity:

    - All forms of grains and bread (wheat, white bread) except oats, barely, and 100% rye bread
    - Chickpeas, garbanzo flour (goodbye hummus)
    - Brown and white rice (I ate brown rice regularly)
    - All apples and apple juice, and apple cider vinegar
    - Cider
    - Hot chocolate
    - Rice milk
    - Black beans (I ate these with every other meal)
    - Wheatgrass
    - Dried beef (I regularly ate jerky)
    - Milk chocolate
    - Sesame seeds and sesame oil
    - Cod liver oil
    - Cod, shrimp
    - All mushrooms
    - Vegan foods: falafel, Seitan

Surprisingly, caffeine and coffee had no sensitivity, but the impact of caffeine > cortisol > acne was something I was already familiar with, and have avoided regular coffee most of the time for that reason.

Since doing the test I’ve done an elimination diet and phased certain things in and out that were regularly consumed foods - namely wheat-related foods that were hard to avoid: hamburger buns, cookies, bakery products, cake at birthday parties, etc. By eliminating those foods and bringing them back in over the past five months, I’ve finally gotten a hold of wheat, black beans, rice and hummus as things I definitely need to avoid. They’re gone and I don’t miss them. Wheat will be the one hard thing to avoid - yes, there will be the occasional birthday party with cake that is unavoidable, because I’m still human and it’s pretty hard to turn down cake, right? Everything in moderation. I’m at a point now where I’ve 100% cut all the high-sensitivity foods, and what do you know... skin cleared up in a week.

So, if you deal with acne as an adult, or if your children deal with it and nothing seems to work, DO A FOOD SENSITIVITY TEST. I did one by submitting hair follicles to https://checkmybodyhealth.com and the report they provided revealed all the things in the list above. All this knowledge gained and if I continued to go the route of seeing a dermatologist, none of them would have suggested this or believed in it, which will always be bizarre to me. I can’t begin to imagine how great it would have been to have had this knowledge 10, 15, 20 years ago.

Some people have absolutely no issues with foods, and for that I envy them! But for others who deal with acne and continue to be prescribed topical medications and antibiotics, that stuff is only going to go so far. Get your gut health right, figure out what triggers inflammation, and get those foods out of your diet.

    • interesting, thanks for sharingBennn
    • You're welcome :)mg33
    • uhm why is not public knowledge by now that acne is a gut problem not a dermatologic one?!grafician

    More progress:

Can't even describe how good this has felt. At 190-192 I hated tucking in my shirts. Always had to suck my stomach in, had bad posture as well. I love tucking in button down shirts now; even if I'm just relaxing my stomach is so much smaller than it was, and if I stand holding my stomach in and tightening my abs, it's incredibly easy and I can feel a better posture that way.

    So, I'm a bit of a chubby chub-chub.

Thinking of doing simple intermittend fasting (eating twice a day, skipping breakfast), so 16 hours no food, and 8 hours with.

First meal at 12:00, last meal at 8.

My Sober-tober is almost officially over. I've made it 30 days without a drop of alcohol with no problem at all. I went to a concert without going to the bar multiple times and not having judge when the new slow song was going to be played so I could go to the bathroom. I met some friends out and ordered a mocktail and some soda waters. Bought some non alcoholic IPS's for my cravings but they weren't very good so I only drank three of them all month. I went to the gym a few times a week. Started eating better and managed to lose 8 lbs in a month.
I didn't even raid my fully stocked liquor cabinet although beer was my problem and not the hard stuff.
I was thinking of drinking a few beers tonight while I took my kids trick or treating but I'm actually really enjoying this moment of sobriety and not being hung over every morning.

I’ve been busting my ass in the gym since August and being more strict than usual with my nutrition, and I’ve gone from 18.9% to 12.94% body fat from August 28th to February 22nd. I’m now doing a Bodybuilding.com training plan called Freak Mode for 12 weeks that was a nice balance of lean muscle gain and fat burning. It’s mostly in my abdominal area, but since August that number has gone from 33 to 18 with caliper measurement. Inner thigh measurement has gone from 22 to 13, and my upper thigh is at 9. It’s crazy to see how I can physically see how lean I’m getting and match that up those those measurements.

Went to Colorado for a snowboard trip two weeks ago and was in the best shape I’ve ever been. Went hard all four days, legs and core felt great and never felt weak or unsafe like I usually do after three days.

Can’t wait to see where I am in May; I feel like I’ve got that base set for actually achieving the “summer body” ripped physique I’d love to have. shape, you seem to be having an awful lot of difficulty making the distinction between simple carbohydrates, and complex ones, and drawing (harmful) conclusions that 'all carbs are evil'.

So, let me give you a refresher on the basics of carbohydrates that you *should* have learned in primary school health class, at the same time you were learning about the food pyramid.

Complex carbohydrates — so-called because they're formed in long, complex chains — are used by both muscles and the brain for energy. Because of their complexity, they're metabolised more slowly, and any surplus is stored not just in the liver, but also in muscle tissue in the form of glycogen for later use. Compex carbohydrates are essential for powering your body through, well, life, and are found in such nutrition-rich sources as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains.

    And, yes, that includes wheat.

Further, complex carbs can be further sub-divided into starchy carbs (featuring naturally-occuring sugars) and fibrous carbs (containing soluble and insoluble fibre). Both perform essential tasks in maintaining good health.

Simple carbohydrates are largely refined sugar. The stuff you add to your coffee. That chocolate bar. The HFCS in your can of Coke. Those carbs — by virtue of their refinement — are absolutely devoid of nutrition, and are responsible for massive blood sugar spikes that lead to things like diabetes and obesity.

Telling people to only eat 100 g of carbs per day is utterly irresponsible. If you're doubting starchy and fibrous carbs are any good for you, the hint is in the word that describes carbs themselves: macronutrient. Nutrient. As in: fucking good for you.

If you want to go all-in with new-agey, pseudo-scientific arse-gravy that tells you to stop eating all carbs ever, fine, but that's on you. Keep it to yourfuckingself.

And just so you know ...

I eat 3 010 kcal per day at the moment, with a macronutrient breakdown of:

    Protein: 194 g/day
    Carbohydrates: 328 g/day
    Fat: 97 g/day

I'm 183 cm tall, weight 80 kg, and am at sub-12% BF.

    How do I do it?

Well, for one, I exercise. I lift 5 days a week.
For another, I eat a balanced diet that makes sure I account for all of my macronutrient needs throughout the week. That balanced diet contains protein from both food and supplements, starchy and fibrous carbs from grains (including wheat) and nuts, fruits, and veg, and healthy unsaturated fats, as well as animal fats.

And guess what? I'm at the healthiest I've ever been, putting on lean muscle mass, have no problems with my liver or cholesterol, am not even close to being diabetic, and am in excellent cardio health. Not bad for 328 g/day of carbs, amirite?

And another thing you may need reminding about:

1 g of both protein and carbohydrates each contain 4 kcal.
1 g of fat (regardless of source or nature) contains 9 kcal. Over *double* the number of calories are the other two macronutrients.

The point? It's not fucking carbs that will make you fat and diabetic. It's eating a number of calories in enormous surplus of your daily calorie needs that will make you fucking fat and diabetic.

So, shape, if you're going sit there and dispense health 'wisdom' about cutting out essential macros, go with:

    1) Reducing overall calorie intake to below your TDEE to reduce fat, if required. Otherwise eat at your TDEE;
    2) reducing the amount of fat you intake *first* to ensure you have enough energy through carbs, and enough muscle mass maintenance with protein (0.8 g/kg body weight for the average — mostly sedentary, which I suspect you of being — adult, and between 1.6-2.2 g/kg body weight for active adults who exercise frequently and regularly).

    Fucking hell.

    • lol, when I saw you list your macros, I knew you were one of them barbellers. Serious question: how much of the 194 protein is powder?garbage

Decided to get rid of all refined carbs and sugar and lost between 20 and 25 lbs since October. What most surprised me is the amount of energy that I was missing! Now it's just toning and maintaining. Single life at my age has me working for my money. xD

Started eating less sugars and carbs, eating mostly meats and vegetables about a month ago. Haven't drank alcohol in months.

Started running a couple of weeks ago. I ran 3.1 miles/5 km a couple of days ago. Looking to start rock climbing in a couple of weeks. Been using the pull up bar everyday. Can do 2 finger pullups now.

Other than my knees, which are sore from running, I'm feeling great physically. My whole body feels light, no friction in any of my joints. I went from 164 lbs to 152 lb in the past month.
