The wrecking ball analogy

We know all about finite resources, just look at the stock market. Consumption at present is unsustainable, and in coming years certain commodities will reach the crisis stage.
Picture Earth as a building, and human consumption as a wrecking ball. The structure will fall, but the rate of collapse is variable depending on the force applied.
The size and location of the impact can affect other areas especially if the foundation is compromised. The objective of both in this case would be to complete the job as cleanly as possible.
The rate and manner of collapse is unique to Earth though, in the respect that we not only control the size of the impact, but the structure can be rebuilt in key areas. The latter seems to be the more realistic approach, as the leading world economies inevitably maximize the impact.Any political illustrators on here? A graphic of consumerism as the wrecking ball, and green industries rebuilding the falling structure might lend an interesting perspective on this.

Interesting, but the only thing we're destroying through consumption is the Earth's ability to support us. Loooooong before we can even assume our actions would destroy the planet, they would destroy our civilization and our species. The Earth will continue to spin and support life (in some form), regardless of what we do, as it's done for the last few billion years.
- Yeah, you got me haha! I didn't mean the planet would explode, just us poofing. =)ZOOP

I think it'll straighten itself out. Either through accident or war or design.
look at this map, areas like northern india, Bangladesh and parts of china are overpopulated compared to the rest of the world, but their populations are thriving and continuing to grow, their consumption seems to be sustainable.
Could the whole planet be so densely populated and still have enough resources to feed everyone? sure if we all lived off a bowl of rice a day and gave up $5 lattes and 20oz steaks.

Look on the bright side, even if that's true we are alive at the best time in history. We get to enjoy the endless consumption, economic growth and technological progress. Sure, future generations might be living in a Mad Max dystopia thanks to our endless binging but fuck it - we'll all be gone by then :)

^^
U.S.A. India
Production / consumption of goods & services 21% 1%
Use of world's non-renewable resources 25% 3%
Creation of world's trash and pollution 25% 3%
Percentage of world's population 5% 16%It's about lack of sustainability "Today humanity uses the equivalent of 1.5 planets to provide the resources we use and absorb our waste. This means it now takes the Earth one year and six months to regenerate what we use in a year."
"Moderate UN scenarios suggest that if current population and consumption trends continue, by the 2030s, we will need the equivalent of two Earths to support us. And of course, we only have one." http://www.footprintnetwork.org/…- It would take more than five Earths to be able to sustain the world population if everyone consumed resources at the same rate as the United StatesZOOP

i'm fuckn sick of getting blamed for everything that happens on this planet, yet corporations that are doing most of the raping get a free pass,
seriously fuck this pseudo defeatist future prediction,
shell, bp, cocacola, pepsi, delmonte, microsoft, apple, de beers, hbc, etc are those raping the world because we've let them entice us with easy consumption good, but do they get the blame? no, off course, it's all the entire human race that we should blame, seriously, why do I only see this kind of debate in 1st world country,
"yeah, dude, we are like a cancer dude! omg so deep"
yet the same people saying this often live in countries that are the biggest consumer/polluter.Solution: you want to help planet earth, live a good rewarding life,
become a farmer, a bee keeper, a fisherman, trow your gizmos away, disconnect from the internet, walk bare feet, enjoy life.Do you honestly think we are destroying this planet, lol, we're killing ourselves mate,
- sorry to be that blunt, but hearing my mom tell me that they had rolling blackout for weeks now and sitting here reading about sustainability from people who won't survive 3 hours without internet is kinda funnyGeorgesIV

Nobody blamed you for everything, chill Georges. Industries are naturally the biggest polluters, nobody said that was you.Solution: Live simply (not van by the river simple) and I do, you'd find the sacrifices I make personally uncomfortable.
Your last comment was just fucking lazy sunshine.

Georges, if I remember correctly, you are fat, therefore I'll presume you are lazy. Extrapolating that life condition, it's safe to say you use an excess of life's trappings. Speaking of excess, you're likely eating too much adding to your weight problem. I'm sure that is a pre-processed foods diet too, to put HFCS on your bleached flour cake... Also, glasses too right? My bet is that you are near sighted. That comes from not only vitamin deficiencies but staring at screens to excess, be them a television as a child into adulthood, now as well your computer screen; which has become your platform for bigotry, hate, and other self-entitled synonyms that describe your daily vitrol.
I do blame you... for being a whiny bitch... all the time.

while we are here masturbating ourselves mentally and albums can stroke his ego with ad hominem attacks,
we're closer to being wiped out by the collapse of the bee population then nuclear war,
I can't wait for this planet to get rid of us, then it can start again,@zoop, I'm a fat neckbeard who like stirring the pot, don't hate me for my vitamin D deficiency :( it makes me cranky

We have only been treating the planet badly in a blink of an eye in terms of the history of the planet. We'll be dealt with sooner or later. Nature is pretty good at what it does best, existing...
