Seriously, how do you keep caring about design?
- detritus0
I don't do it as my main job any more..

"transition to making product" seems to be a fairly constant trajectory for a lot of the people I've seen pass through these halls.
- Agree. I think at some point we all reevaluate and dip our toes in this, one way or another.Complexfruit

absolutely. i'm not the greatest designer but man i will pixel police some of the more important things i do with no mercy. because it's gotta look right.
- prophetone0
do 'people' keep caring about design? not really imo. the world is going the way of chicken mcnuggets everywhere i look. no one has time to pay attention anymore it seems. i hope i'm wrong.

i don't care about design. i care about art. i just do what i gotta do to get paid while learning what i can to make better art.
probably an ego thing

Design is such an ephemeral sort of thing that the design you put sweat and tears into today will look dated in just a couple years.
- Not if you do your job well! 'Design' isn't about slapping on the latest fad...detritus
- its about satisfying the client ;)OP31

- i thought design was about solving problems?lessfloor

.
i don't care, in it for the money.

Between the death of Flash and every other website being a Wordpress template or $20 theme, I don't give a flying fuck about design anymore. It's just a nice paycheck.

- BRAVO!!
GeorgesIV - Web design isn't the only kind of design. In fact, I am a designer and never touch the fucking things.monospaced

Utopian, I agree. I find it challenging. It is difficult to land a client that doesn't want to conform. To your point, unconventional would really stand out right now because these templates are killing us.
- Learn to sell, if what you propose makes more sense clients will gladly pay for better value.zarkonite
- Try designign something else besides websites?monospaced
- I design more than websites. Worked at BBDO. Thankscanoe
- And, whether I use templates or not is not the point. They are ubiquitous before me.canoe
- dbloc0
we never use templates where I work. Are you guys really using templates? Or are you just saying they are all over the web these days?
- the templates i use are more of a framework or app or whatever, their blank, except for my own site, straight up template 4 shamemoldero
- shame
aint nobody got time fo datmoldero - some good blank templates (like canvas) come with updates, leaving you to focus more on the design and leaving all that comparability shit to the devsmoldero
- compatibility shit to the devsmoldero
- keep mind there will always be compatibility issues, but going with a FW atop WP minimizes the timemoldero
- Web design is like... 1/1000th of actual design. Jesus.monospaced

QBN cares about design. they are trying to preserve this nice format and hot interface forever...

I find that its a pretty easy job and even better if you are lucky enough to get a decent salary. I only love it when its fun, but those projects don't always happen.
- _niko0
i call Bullshit to anyone who says they don't care about design.
As soon as we see a new product or poster or car we immediately and passionately care the shit out of it one way or another lol
- Not really. I'm still utterly indifferent to iOS7, for example.Continuity
- Some people grow out of worrying about material things.canoe
- yeah but we always make a judgement call on the design good or bad, not the material thing per se_niko

I care then I don't care and back to caring again. It's a fucking emotional roller coaster, guys.
- Continuity0
Like detritus, it's not been my main job for quite some time. I've been working on general ideas for campaigns and stuff. I care about that, cos it's fun. I leave the caring about the minutiae of design to art directors and designers I work with.
- scarabin0
it depends on what you mean by "care"
obviously you want to do the job to the best of your ability and have a nice portfolio piece, but in some instances i think it's a mistake to become too emotionally involved in a project whose fate ultimately will be decided by some idiot client with an arbitrary idea of what's good, or by the mood of your creative director that day. i made that mistake many times and at a certain point it becomes necessary to distance yourself and not get too altruistic and think you're changing the world or something
- amen to that shitmoldero
- Hit the nail on the head, you did. Exactly this.Continuity
- Definitely true, you have to be somewhat detached from your workukit2
- ... unless you're the creative director =)zarkonite
- yurimon0
there is superficial caring, and then there is the deeper non superficial caring where your work has meaning...
- You're a commercial designer, not Leonardo Fucking daVinci. Your work has no meaning at all.Continuity
- Leonardo was a commercial artist of his time time, he invented shit for moneyyurimon
- Damn, I would hate to work with Cont - the craft means something to the designer assholecanoe
- I have a feeling whatever Cont is working on is more important than anything else.canoe
