Swine flu 'not stoppable,' World Health Organization says
The World Health Organization raised the swine flu alert Thursday to its highest level, saying the H1N1 virus has spread to enough countries to be considered a global pandemic.

"This is an important and challenging day for all of us," WHO Director General Margaret Chan said in a briefing with reporters. "We are moving into the early days of the first flu pandemic of the 21st century."
The last previous pandemic occurred in 1968.
As of Thursday, the virus had spread to 74 countries, the health agency said. There were 28,774 confirmed cases and 144 deaths.
The United States had 13,217 cases and 27 deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said June 5 in its weekly update. Cases have been reported in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Priscilla and I are donating $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to help fight Ebola.
The Ebola epidemic is at a critical turning point. It has infected 8,400 people so far, but it is spreading very quickly and projections suggest it could infect 1 million people or more over the next several months if not addressed.
We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio.
We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome.
Grants like this directly help the frontline responders in their heroic work. These people are on the ground setting up care centers, training local staff, identifying Ebola cases and much more.
We are hopeful this will help save lives and get this outbreak under control.

Another med worker who cared for Duncan tests positive for ebola.

the virus exist since decades, everyone knows it's one of the most dangerous virous we know and could be a serious threat AND strangely, now, out of nowhere, Canadian gov. is testing a vaccine against Ebola on humans.
*Where's my tinfold hat*

Well, I do admit, I thought similar. If I read right, they had concluded animal testing right before this outbreak. Now already on human trials. What a way to fast track a multi-year process.

Profit not the motive?
Christ.******** - The only reason the Canadian vaccine hasn't been deployed yet is because an American company is trying to secure its license to profit commercially from it.i_monk

From all the fucking big cities in US it had to be the most random one....DALLAS!I'm not freaking out but you can't help it when everyone is just talking about it and out of nowhere there's another person diagnosed with that :-/
So, they've been speculating about the nurses that took care of the Ebola patient and how they might have been in contact with other patients in the hospital...

now's the time to start mandatory quarantining of anyone flying in from any country known to have ebola and have them stay at the Emory Hospital B&B for 21 days or until cleared to leave.
Give them gov't paid sick leave for 3 weeks, a new tablet/computer with internet access and all you can eat cable tv subscription in their room. And of course all-you-can-eat Papa Johns Pizza and drink of their choice.
