Find Your Self

Hoping this to being a longer discussion so i've created a thread instead of right in the blog.

Why does everyone (or many people) wants to find them self? or know them self?

    I truly don't understand that.
Do you really have to put a definition of your self down in writing? I feel very disconnected with this subject. I've always just live my live. Do whatever i felt like. But not for once have i ever question my self who i am. Is that question even necessary?
I never cared if i know my self or if i have found my self.

Does a owl ever tell it self to be an owl? or does it just do whatever it gotta do.

Been wondering and talking about this question with my friends for the last couple days.

    what's your thought?

  • jaylarson1

i ponder the question of atman vs anatman all day everyday. all i realize is that any perception i have of anything is likely just perception itself. so i give up and just focus on removing the space between my inhalations and exhalations and just be experience itself. but that's hard and requires "impossible concentration".

    • "atman vs anatman"
      interesting.
      i'll look into that.

Knowing yourself is important and the path to happiness.

Too many people are busy trying to be like everyone else and it makes them unhappy.

What exactly do you mean by knowing your self?
What do you like? What makes you happy?
    Don't everyone already know that?

Perhaps being someone else really makes them happy.
Whatever rocks your boat am I right?

I feel left out that I don't ever feel the need to find my self.

    • the sum of your parts is yourself. your place in the universe is the perspective of yourself. your purpose is who you are and what you need to do in this worldyurimon

You are the sum of your experiences. So by trying to "find your self", you are already changing who you are. It's a constantly moving target that will never be reached.

I guess the difference between an owl and a person is that an owl is true to itself already. An owl doesn't need to find itself because the owl is simply an owl. No one tells the owl how to act or how to think, it's completely true to itself.

Us, on the other hand, from the moment we are born are told how to behave, how to act, how to dress, how to speak, what we must do when we're older. Everyone around us has expectations and demands of us. We watch TV and the read the news which shapes us even further.

By the time we are adults we are almost completely a product of our surroundings and our upbringing... and our thoughts. Our thoughts which aren't really our own but more like echoes of our surroundings and manifestations of our insecurities born from our artificial and pretentious surroundings.

The owl is truly an owl, perfectly what it was always designed to be, but we are more complicated, more artificial and more programmed than that. I can see the merit in wanting to "find yourself", to understand the more true part of yourself that inevitably has taken a backseat behind the static of our totally artificial modern life.

    • I guess I never give a fuck what others think of me. Or do what other tells me to. I am what i am because I learnd how to survive in this modern life...pango

    • I'd say you have better chance to express yourself in modern society than you did in primitive society where most time was spent hunting and gathering food.yuekit
    • maybe that's the cause? We are too free or have too much time to trying to be different then others and have our own identity. instead of just be true with ourpango

Self reflection is important. one main key is to have self unity. Alignment of all your components, higher self and lower self, psychological and psychical in action once you find who you are, and your purpose. who you are and your purpose go hand in hand. One major philosophical work that does this definition is called Kabalah. few versions of it hermetic, and judaic. its designed to answer these questions and breakdown of archetypes within the human psychology. Also I find Taoist principles in health very helpful. It's a huge topic these practices along with chi gong or tai chi type exercises that are inner working forms can add to your health and understanding. There are a few cultures that deal well in this. (anything esoteric) shinto buddism, Tibetan, qabalah, Sufism,

Mostly everything that holds you back is considered a blockage of energy or flow. it could be emotional or physical. emotional could be trama, self perception, any consistently negative thoughts or patterns that block your flow in life or create negative patterns. usually it starts out as emotional. physical blockage could relate to diet, where it can effect your brain chemistry, also weakness in some organ function do to stagnation. there is more detail to its understanding but the point is that you have to think of yourself as whole. if some of your parts, either emotional or physical has issues or blockage then it will effect you in some way no matter how subtle it appears.

The process of self knowing is the alignment of your emotions, intuition, rational thought, health in the physical body in thought and action. your thoughts and actions are one with yourself because you know yourself and your purpose. result of this process is the elimination of things that hold you back and you become the architect of you life. remember that in knowing you choose through free will a healthier outcome for yourself if you are successful in this process and you will be successful in your choices because you have cleared your hangups that stop you.

    • I can't hear you over the sound of my logical fallacies.ORAZAL
    • haha, your loss,yurimon
    • just to add. that to get to the point there are tools to help you and its more of process than most realize. but it needs to be consistently worked on.yurimon

    • I mean really if you feel so defensive about your false belief system that you have to ridicule this post, you need to have a long hard think about yourself.set

    An owl does owl stuff.
    A human does human stuff.
A human cannot do owl stuff.
We could pretend to do owl stuff (See 'Dr' Alan Partridge’s pellet production ;) ) but we would never know or understand what it is we’re doing as our frame of reference is exclusively human.
I think that part of what it means to be human is to embrace our abilities to question the fuck out of everything. IMO that’s the human thing: the questioning, the exploration, the adventure. It’s about the journey not the destination. It’s what sets us apart.
Self is subjective and adaptive. You are your decisions, your environment, your preferences, dislikes, loves etc, etc. If you don’t like it or recognise it, change it. You’re the only person that can.

    • "what it means to be human is to embrace our abilities to question the fuck out of everything" you mean like science?moldero
    • No. Question the scientists conclusions, results, theories, evidence. Science is a process, not a position.Morning_star
    • You could argue that humans can't NOT do human stuff. Everything we do is by necessity true to ourselves.sarahfailin
    • not if you are divided and conquered from within. if you brainwashed and give up responsibility like a nazi. your true nature is weakness to your true selfyurimon
    • I don't agree Yuri. To survive is being true to your 'self'. That may require subordinate behaviour. That's about as true or instinctive as it gets.Morning_star
    • society creates and illusion of this because we can make it what we want and not mold into it like sheep to other who control banking. thats why i dont agreeyurimon
    • typo. others who control it I mean. so its not real survival, conformity. manipulation, illusion and real survival is different.yurimon
    • There is no external illusion. Whatever a person experiences is real, whether it's on the African Planes or the Boardrooms on Wall StreetMorning_star
