I stop using it over a year ago and 98% of my clients are in the music industry.
It all went downhill when they started implementing that system that will take down copyrighted music automatically, a lot of big name artists had their own albums taken down for absolutely no reason. Then they make it hard for them to prove they owned the recordings, that's when they turn against artists instead oh helping them. The amazing thing about soundcloud was that it gave the artist a voice over record labels, when big labels got involved the artist got screwed again and they left.
Then they started putting ads on the songs and stuff... It was inevitable. Everyone moved to bandcamp / mixcloud and spotify.
There was a time where soundcloud was king though, I loved them so much...
- it's still going strong in terms of users.
I agree the ads are shit but the copyright issue was forced on them - wasn't their choice.fadein11

Too bad I can't just PAY for it or something...

How could such a massive site go under? I get that they have a lot of server / developer costs, but can't they just flood the damn thing with ads? Everything else free like this does.

Overtime these companies seem to strike a good thing, they instantly get greedy.
Soundcloud was supposed to be a simple underground site for producers and bands to share their stuff, for fun or for feedback - now the stupid fat cat fucks are trying to become a giant like itunes or youtube or something.
Slow down, do what you do well, and stop trying to be the next Facebook.

I thought they were in the process of being bought-out?

I liked them too, but seems like they're done...
