So... a bit of a star wars style question.
What order would you show these 6 film to a noob?

    • Probably in order of release. You can skip Resurrection, as much as I love these films I can't watch 4 again - it adds nothing to the overall story. At all.face_melter
    • Watch Aliens twice to make up for it.face_melter
    • Just watch Alien, Aliens, and Predator and forget the rest.sarahfailin
    • I've see every one multiple times. Just wondering as it is a fun dilemma I have with introducing my 5yrold to star wars in the next year or so.Hayzilla
    • SW is easy. In order, Rogue One, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, TFA... done.ETM
    • ^ This way Darth Vader stays a bad ass and is never referred to as "Annie" FFS.ETM
    • ^ But the kids love the first 3. Can't deny him that. Jaja Binks hahahaHayzilla
    • 1 then 3 (Director's cut) and read the original 3rd script and your done!mugwart
    • Alien, aliens, prometheus, covenantsince1979
    • Nah man, resurrection only film you need to watchfuturefood
    • 1. Alien
      2. Aliens
      Repeat
I would defiantly not bother the shit out of including anything beyond aliens, franchised to death.
      Bullitt
    • If you watched the prequels first, you can of ruin the mystery of Alien.
Which is Jaws in space, you don’t see the shark till the end right?
      Bullitt
    • ... which is ironic that franchised the shit out of jaws too. Probably due a reboot soon hahaBullitt
    • "Just watch Alien, Aliens, and Predator and forget the rest."inteliboy
    • Watch alien3 and alien: resurrection in reversefuturefood
  • since1979-4

Finally saw it and it is very close to the original Alien and Prometheus. It's a perfect amalgamation!

    Great film!
I love the airborn virus effects. Science is scary!

This is pretty impressive whatever you think of the movie

    • VFX was really decent. Film was a bit haunted housey horror. But it did look good.PhanLo
    • some parts were incredible. others dire. But even the worst of the CG was far better than any of the writing!mugwart

Watched it, liked it! CG Xenomorphs were great. Loved the fact that David had been 'engineering' the species too, liked all those weird gothic shots in the room with the sketches. McBride was good, Fassbender was great, spotted that twist as soon as it happened though.

I'm not sure what everyone gets so bent about, it felt the truest to canon since Aliens to me.

    • Pfft Of course you loved it David....uh I mean, Dave. < Nope, definitely not a synthetic. :PGM278
    • Bc its popular. Everyone on qbn hates things other people like. Only underground shit is acceptable here. LolzCygnusZero4
    • again, felt like I've seen this movie a million times. Scott could have taken the story in a different direction, IMO.Ramanisky2
    • The only person who can take it somewhere really new is Blomkamp. Same as Nolan with BatmanDaveO
    • @GM278 MegaLOL!DaveO
    • title should have been Alien Convoluted imo, shite plot & predictable end. Way to fuck shit up Ridley!mrAtor
    • Blomkamp's film was panned in favour of this ... makes the sting so much more painfulmugwart

I finally just watched it last night and I thought it was pretty damn good, (I'm bias because I've always been a big Alien franchise fan) but don't limit your own experience by listening to me or any other god damned useless critic, just go and watch it and make up your own mind.

    • at the first time you can't pay attention to the details properly, watch it again.sted
    • still would have liked to have seen more of the Engineers instead of the same ole story of humans being knocked off one by one.Ramanisky2
    • i liked it too. not perfect, but it was a good sci fi movieCygnusZero4
    • I'm a big Alien fan, even Alien 3, the one nobody likes, which biased me *against* this garbage.i_monk
    • i_monk, I love Alien 3 too, (and 2, and 1).Muncher
    • (I was one of the many who thought Prometheus was a ridiculous scribble though, so I wont be watching this new one)Muncher

Finally saw this, maybe it was reading all these negative comments but didn't think it was THAT terrible.

But wow...what a dark, grim movie haha especially the ending. Reminded me of Alien 3 in that regard.

    • Alien3 was good thoughmugwart
    • i felt very meh ... just wish more time was spent on the Engineers instead of the same ole Horror movie trope of humans being dropped one by one.Ramanisky2
    • Yeah I understand the disappointment it didn't depict more of the engineers world. It seems like even with a big budget film like this they would rather leaveyuekit
    • that to the imagination rather than try and fail.yuekit

I actually like Prometheus and Covenant more than the first 2 Alien movies. The first one, although it has a really cool kinda 70s practical effects look to it, the movie itself is just... bleh. There's only a handful of characters in it, and they spend a LOT of time just staring at each other. That movie really could have been 45 minutes long if they cut out all the filler shots.

Aliens was ok, but it was just a space marine movie. Bill Paxton whined the entire movie. It was so painful.

These latter 2 movies are more interesting to me. More to look at visually, more kinda back story lore stuff. Im into that so Id rather watch these than those first 2 movies.

I dont really understand why people have such high expectations for these movies. Is it because the name Alien is so well known for so long? Go back and watch the first 2. All they are is stupid alien horror movies.

Covenant was really no different at all. It was literally the same exact thing as the first 2 movies, so if you like them, youll like this. Same thing with the star wars movies. The original trilogy is basically just some stupid cartoon. Its ridiculous. Made for little kids. If you like that sort of thing, like I do, then what was the problem with the prequels? It was all just stupid sci fi shit to me, and I liked the prequels for that. Had some cool planets, some cool shits.... good enough for me! Because I wasnt expecting anything more than that. Those movies are really well designed. Thats what I like SW for, nothing more.

People seem to build these franchises up over time in their minds and suddenly they make them out to be something they never were in the first place. These are not meant to be the godfather trilogy lmao, or some other intellectually intelligent franchise. Its just dumbass sci fi crap. Covenant delivered that. Sounds to me like those that didnt like it probably just dont really care that much about this kind of movie anymore, so dont watch them?

    • Folks get pissy because it doesn't elicit the same magical response the original movies did TWENTY YEARS AGO [see also: Star Wars]Morning_star
    • Defending the SW prequels invalidates everything you have to say on the topic of film. Enjoy your garbage.i_monk
    • Easy there i_monk, I wasn't defending, just explaining the phenomena. SW prequels are, at best, hollow shells.Morning_star

I came back from the cinema and Prometheus was on the TV, rewatched, yeah, I think it's better than Covenant and I thought that was going to be impossible.

    • they probably edited a lot on the TV version, that is impossible. Gigli was better than prometheus and I've never seen gigliMiguex
  • Miguex1

So I just saw this and was pretty happy with it from start to finish, was entertaining and although its aprox 2hs long it never felt long.

Whoever said it was worse than Prometheus probably has no recollection of it, go and watch that crap again. It set the bar so low that covenant was easy... a vast improvement.

Kenny Powers was better than expected too, it's like he was born to play redneck characters but this was a bit more on the serious side, was weird not too see him riding on a jetski but he was ok.

    Hey...

it could have been A LOT WORSE

    • As "whoever" I can tell you I've watched Prometheus two or three times, and once as part of the Derelict edit, trying to see what I must be missing.i_monk

It was as bad as Prometheus, if not worse.

The characters were the barest outlines and too numerous/indistinct. I think I only caught two of their names, but I was never really sure how many there were. Crudup's conflict over being a man of faith (is that all he's allowed to play now since coming out as Super Christian?) not wanting it held against him in a rational world was interesting, but my description of it is about as much attention as it got on screen. Tennessee is from Tennessee so he wears a Tennessee cowboy hat and drinks Tennessee whisky: what is this paint-by-numbers bullshit being passed off as characterization? Motives are paper thin.

Michael Fassbender kissing Michael Fassbender is a perfect metaphor for how self-indulgent, narcissistic, and fan-service-oriented this franchise has become, recycling the core elements of Alien and Aliens without any real understanding for why those movies have been put on a pedestal by fans. If there are any more Alien movies I hope Scott is kept as far from them as possible, because someone needs to break it out of the rut the franchise has fallen into aping itself.

Throwing in Giger sketches was a shark-jump moment for sure.

    • I said it from the jump, this was going to suck and it did.severian
    • Prometheus might have ben "bad" to you, but they should have stuck that story and improved it. At least that was an original thought.severian
    • Just realized I confused Crudup with Jim Caviezel, so ignore that bit.i_monk

I think this series has gotten to that point where the iconography of it, the ideas, the alien itself, is what's good, and will always be good, but the films themselves won't deliver.

Like Jason Voorhees, he's a great horror icon. His movies tho, they suck for the most part. Or Godzilla. Franchise fatigue.

    • agree. people still have love for it and expectations.

      Netflix presents Alien: Origin?

Pros: Looks gorgeous in IMAX. The world looks, sounds and feels very Alien. Really liked the horror treatment; much better than Prometheus. Almost all the Alien tropes are there, which I enjoyed. (some will say overused)

Cons: I wish the story stayed with the engineers' background more. You can tell the reaction to Prometheus really pushed this story into what it is. Still contains some stupid decisions by some characters (Prometheus stupid). Exposition is a huge crutch.

It kind of answers some questions but also raises even more questions, which I feel is true to the franchise. Enjoyed it for sure. Could have been so much better though.
