RIP comandante, the last of his kind, ultimate symbol of anti- globalization.

The fact that he went in, with a handful of men and women, and started a revolution in Cuba, and held power for 50 years all the while sticking up by his middle finger to the United States is nothing short of remarkable.

Say what you will about the freedom on the island and the human rights record, but his people are some of the smartest, well educated and well trained people on earth. Given the little resources it has, Cuban's doctors and medical system are renowned the world over.

I think even though they have a standard of living way below what we're used to in the west, life for the average (poor) citizen is much better than life for the average (poor) citizen in most countries in Latin America, South America, Mexico and even the United States where crime, guns and gangs are rampant.

Had great experiences every time I've been there, love the people and the island and the cigars lol, but I have a feeling it's all going to go to hell as soon as the first Golden Arches go up.

    • Although having said this I've never heard of anyone building a makeshift raft and defecting into Cuba lol_niko
    • the people are absolutely useless and dependant on the gov't. anyone who was smart and resourceful left the island a long time ago. everyone lives in miseryhotroddy
    • fidel lived in an ivory tower.hotroddy
    • lol niko is utterly clueless, go change your underwear nikoterry_cloth
    • have you been to cuba or are you talking out of your ass again?_niko
    • this is my personal experience, never said it was a paradise, just offering my observations, if you want to debate my points go ahead but don't be a troll._niko
    • you can set your watch by terry_cloth comments - reliable as clockworkFax_Benson
    • lol, nope, never been to cuba, i have worked with cubans that have told me pretty much the exact opposite of what you said though. i'll take their word over yoterry_cloth
    • -urs. so, whose ass is doing the talking? have you been to cuba niko, their standard of living is better than in the US? you sure you've been to cuba niko?terry_cloth
    • lol yes many times, , i think you never bother reading peoples notes and just get triggered by keywords lol._niko
    • yea, so triggered, totally. tell me more about how cuba has a better standard of living than the US, fucking retardterry_cloth
    • Lol read my notes , I compared Cuba to Haiti not the United States you triggered snowflake lol_niko
    • honesy why bother trolling? You never have anything of substance to say or have any arguments, you just resort to name calling which is weak as fuck._niko
    • "is much better than life for the average (poor) citizen. . .and even the United States where crime, guns and gangs are rampant."terry_cloth
    • oh what was that? what were you saying?terry_cloth
    • idiotterry_cloth
    • why compare to haiti and not DR or PR?hotroddy
    • ^a much better comparison. anyways, sorry about the name calling niko, you're not an idiot, your just saying idiotic shitterry_cloth
    • Fair enough but you take a poor black kid in Cuba and compare him to a poor black kid in Detroit or any US ghetto I'd argue that the Cuban kid has it better._niko
    • Free education for life, free universal health care, no guns, less if any drugs, less if any violence and less if any racism._niko
    • For a small nation of only 11 million, they punch way above their weight in healthcare, education etc. They have produced some of the greatest literary works in_niko
    • ...the Spanish language, their athletes consistently over perform in the Olympics, baseball, chess and boxing._niko
    • Again, until you've been there, spoken to the people on the ground and lived their amazing culture, you have no idea how proud and strong these people are._niko
    • And really, to rule for 50 years, outlast 10 presidents (since Eisenhower!) survive 66 assassination attempts while thumbing his nose at the world's superpower_niko
    • Is nothing short of remarkable._niko
    • Do you know that Cuba sends 10's of thousands of medical and other professionals abroad to help impoverished third world countries?_niko
    • Not bad for a brutal regime https://en.m.wikiped…_niko
    • wow, _niko, you go somewhere for vacation and you think you live the same life of the local, fuckn lol, what is this lunacy, It takes a minimum of a year livingGeorgesII
    • in a country to start seeing the layers of life, but you believe because you talked with people that would be disappeared if they spoke what was on their mindGeorgesII
    • makes you an expert, godammit, I've been living here 2 years and I can't even hazard to know what all german thinks, but you go there for vacation, spend US $$$GeorgesII
    • and that makes you some kind of expert, shit this is both funny and sadGeorgesII
    • +1 Georgespablo28
    • Lol Not an expert just my opinion. Where did I say I was an expert. By the same token does it make you a fucking expert in Cuba by not having been there?_niko
    • But you and everyone else seem to have an opinion on Cuba as well._niko
    • You say he did tons of bad things I say he did tons of good. He did both. Is one of us right and the other wrong? Did anyone say he was an angel?_niko
    • Can you name me a government with a spotless human rights record? I'll look internally to Canada and see what a shitty job we've done with our natives._niko
    • You want to look at america's human rights record? Or maybe Mexico or any other Latin or South American country. Are any spotless?_niko
    • Or you want to talk about any country in Africa or the Middle East? China maybe? No lets talk about little Fidel and his little island._niko
    • "Say what you will about the freedom on the island and the human rights record" I stopped reading there, for fucks sake...ernexbcn
    • Well, least both regimes share some common ground. They both have prison camps used for torture on Cuban soil. - ducks for cover.monoboy
    • niko, you are fighting a battle you won't win. You are debating tools that have showed their own head so deep their own ass...pr2
    • ...that it's impossible for them to see the light.pr2
    • Long live la revolucion camaradas!valentim
  • zaq2

I've been to Cuba too and really love the country and it's people. Although I am on the fence about Fidel being portrayed as a hero.
And he might be to some, but to others he is a dictator executing his opposition, passing power to family and having control of the press same as in North Korea and Belarus, where I am originally from.
When you compare Cuba to other latin countries take into consideration that Cuba was better than those countries before the revolution too and you would never know where it would be today if not for Fidel.

Saying that I would really be disappointed when Trump tower will arise in a middle Havana.

  • hotroddy2

A Relentless dictator who used anti-imperialism and Marxism as ideological shields to enslave the Cuban people

  • Gnash1

    http://pix11.com/2016/11/26/cast…

Castro survived 600 assassination attempts, officials say

His would-be assassins are alleged to have plotted to kill him in a variety of ways, including poisoning him, dosing his dive suit with fatal botulism and blowing him up during a speech. Many of the plots were spectacular failures. More Wile E. Coyote than Jason Bourne.

  • Fax_Benson0

Obviously did some remarkable things that came at a massive cost. Truth is prob somewhere between niko and hotroddy's assessments.

  • GeorgesII-1

He was a cunt who is loved by liberal cunts because they have never experienced living under a dictatorship and think wearing this cunt's tshirt makes them cool, hedgy and revolutionary..

I for one is glad for the Cuban, they can now determine their own future and decide if they want to follow the western "ideals" or keep that communism game going..

may he rest in peace surrounded by the citizens he tortured to death, executed and those that drowned escaping his marxist paradise

    • well said georges, well said, and may the moral relativists choke on their own ethical bankruptcyterry_cloth
    • you're right but do the free people of the favelas all over latin america have it way better? no education, no jobs and no hope._niko
    • does making money and chasing the capitalist dream equal happiness? how well is that working for the hundreds of thousands that die every year from poverty_niko
    • and the drug wars raging throughout the free latin american world?_niko
    • look at two neighbouring islands with a similar sized population, Haiti vs Cuba, if you can tell me in what way Haiti is better off i'd like to hear it._niko
    • I'd say it's the hard left who go out of their way to defend him, rather than 'liberal cunts' in general.Fax_Benson
    • as if the problems down there are as simple as communism vs. capitalismterry_cloth
    • Everyone's an expert. Lolpango
    • I guess you could ask the same about the people of Chile and Argentina how their benvolent rightwing dictatorship treated them.face_melter
    • _niko, do you live in Cuba?GeorgesII
    • Do you?_niko
    • Lets bring them the capatalist paradise instead with a 24 hour kardashians chanel and introduce them to the joys of getting shot in the head for your Jordans_niko
    • Or maybe things will really turn around for them when they get into the crack game, oh and freedom fries can't forget the freedom fries._niko
    • You can compare any country's human rights record in the Americas and it's just as shitty. But Fidel gives his poor people a better shot_niko
    • buddy, your tourists rose tinted view of things doesn't stand up to the views of the million+ cubans who have fled the forsaken hell hole. just shut up alreadyterry_cloth

Good riddance, that motherfucker tried to invade my country in 1967. The managed to soft invade it decades later by sweet talking to the other gigantic cunt that was Hugo Chávez.

May them both burn in hell.

    • agreedterry_cloth
    • Liar! According to the US communist left, Fidel and Chavez are hero's that proved socialism, murder, and govt corruption were positive!Hayoth
    • ^ Just ask Colin KaepernickHayoth
    • hahaha, fucking colinterry_cloth
    • Pretty horrible and brutal regime. He did overthrow a corrupt US based administration in his own country. Survived plot after plot to assassinate him.monoboy
    • Years of US financial blockades crippled the country. Regime then ate itself. Lots of victims.monoboy
    • Nearly killed us all.monoboy
    • @monoboy, pretty similar to what's happening today with Maduro in Venezuela. Dictatorships are fed by corruption and demagogy. However...maquito
    • The regime didn't end; worse, it is now in hands of an absolute mad man. Shouting out to be invaded and thus, to make a living hell out of every South Americanmaquito
    • venezuela is in ruins and it wasn't by any imperialist embargo. that is just a convenient excuse. communism loves to play the victim cardhotroddy

    • Venezuela is a basket case. Should be one the richest countries in Americas with the amount of oil it has.monoboy

Loved and hated. I was talking with my parents today, one is a socialist, the other a center-right liberal, both Uruguayans. No matter what sides you're in, an iconic character, one of the few remaining from the text books of last century, passed away. My condolences to all castrist Cubans, and desires for peace and humility for the rest.

    Worst may come to worst...
